Adoption Policy
How to Adopt
Every Adoption Makes a Difference
You have the opportunity to adopt dogs, cats, and other small companion animals from the Stafford County Animal Shelter located at 26 Frosty Lane, Stafford, VA 22554. We believe every adoptable animal deserves a fresh start and new opportunity, regardless of age, breed, or species.
Adoption Fees
Adoption fees are $45 for dogs and $35 for cats. This fee includes the adoption and microchipping services.
There is no adoption fee for small companion animals such as hamsters, guinea pigs, or reptiles.
Puppies and kittens adopted from the shelter receive their first distemper vaccination and are dewormed. It is the adopter’s responsibility to ensure that the animal receives all required booster vaccinations and routine veterinary care after adoption.
All adoptions must be completed in person at the shelter. Staff will provide the necessary paperwork and review the adoption process with you.
Identification Requirements
Adopters must present a valid photo ID, such as a driver's license. The ID will be checked against the shelter’s “Do Not Adopt To” list.
If the address on your photo ID is not current, you will be asked to provide a recent bill or similar document as proof of residence.
Transporting Your New Pet
To ensure the safety of the animal during transportation, adopters should bring the following:
For cats: a secure cat carrier
For dogs: a properly fitted collar and leash
Proper restraint is required for all animals leaving the shelter. Adopters will not be permitted to leave with an animal without appropriate means of securing the pet.
If you do not have a carrier for a cat, cardboard cat carriers are available for purchase at the shelter for $5.00 each.
Thank you for helping us ensure the safety and well-being of every animal leaving the Stafford County Animal Shelter.
