Note from Our FounderNote from Our Founder

Dear Friends,

You are fantastic; you have adopted a pet and are going to be the best pet parent ever! But perhaps your pet, like my door-bolting, fence-climbing, adventure-seeking Jake, has his own agenda. One in three pets goes missing during his or her lifetime, and without proper ID, 90% never return home. That's why I made sure Jake was microchipped, and the chip number was registered to me. Your adopted dog (or cat or bunny) may already have a microchip, and that's good. But your first step as a new pet parent is to make sure that microchip is registered and is pointing to home -- YOUR home (and phone number). Your veterinarian or shelter can scan your pet to get the chip number, and no matter what brand of chip, the folks at HomeAgain will register it in the national database. We see many obviously beloved pets in shelters that we know have homes; we just can't find them because their chips were never registered or the contact information wasn't updated. Don't let this happen to your pet.

 As ever,
Betsy Saul, Co-founder

HAPPY TAIL: To the Rescue

No one who came to Foothills Animal Shelter in Golden, CO, seemed to be looking for a little old rat terrier mix with bad knees. Then Shawn Glazer of Wheat Ridge saw the pooch on Petfinder and thought, "I too am older, have bad knees and allergies." It seemed to be the perfect match.

Ask an expert your dog behavior questions! In celebration of Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, we've invited Pia Silvani, vice president of training and behavior at St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey, to be our dog expert in Petfinder's monthly moderated forum October 24-30. Hope to see you there!

Here's What You Said

Last month we asked how your shelter or rescue mutt is smart, savvy and amazing. Ali's two rescued dogs, Gidget and Gracie, participate with Ali in agility. "They are both so quick to pick up on new behaviors and love to work and have fun," Ali writes. "Gidget has been competing for a year. Gracie is still learning, but when she's ready, she's going to be awesome!"

Our friends at Dogster have recently discovered an awesome, over the top dog-themed house in their Bay Area backyard. The owner, Eni Green, started her collection with a sculpture that paid tribute to a much-loved pet -- and her magnificent obsession with all things canine only grew from there.
