Katniss's Story
Meet Katniss!

Katniss is a fluffy, fox-faced sweetheart with the gentlest soul and the cutest permanently smiling expression. At around 2 years old and 65 pounds, this gorgeous girl is believed to be a Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever mix with the perfect combination of softness, sensitivity, playfulness, and quiet affection.

Katniss and her brother Peeta were dumped and left to fend for themselves, so learning to trust humans again has been a slow and emotional journey for her. When she first arrived, she was incredibly timid and unsure of the world around her. But over time, with patience, consistency, treats, toys, and the comfort of another dog nearby, Katniss has slowly started blossoming into the sweetest goofy little shadow.

Like many intelligent and sensitive dogs, Katniss can be shy and avoidant with new people at first. She prefers slow introductions and needs time to observe before deciding someone is safe. Once she starts trusting you, though, her affectionate side begins peeking through in the softest ways.

One of the most endearing things about Katniss is that she still gets a little startled sometimes when you first reach to pet her, but the moment she realizes shes being loved on, she completely melts into it and happily accepts every bit of affection. Its like watching her actively learn that tenderness can exist without fear.

Katniss absolutely loves other dogs and has done wonderfully with every dog shes met so far. Having another confident and friendly dog in the home would likely help her continue building confidence and settling into a new environment. She also LOVES toys and gets delightfully goofy when shes feeling playful and comfortable.

She rides well in the car, is highly food motivated, and is continuing to work through her fears on walks and in public settings. The outside world can still feel overwhelming for her right now, so shell need an adopter who understands that trust and confidence are built through patience and positive reinforcement, not pressure.

Because of her size and timid personality, we believe Katniss would do best in a calmer home with older children (10+) who can respect her space while she adjusts. She would thrive with someone experienced with shy dogs, a predictable routine, and ideally another dog companion to help guide her.

Watching Katniss discover comfort, affection, toys, soft beds, and safety has been incredibly special. Beneath her timid exterior is an incredibly loving, goofy girl who just wants to feel secure enough to fully be herself.

Katniss is the kind of dog who will cautiously steal your heart and then completely melt into your arms once she knows shes safe.

Katniss is located in Houston, Texas. Transport to most states available for an additional fee of $350-$500
