Meli breaks the screen door— by Sarah in Kenosha, WI
Our cat, Meli, is the most social, loving cat we’ve ever met. When we found him at the humane society in 2009, he reached his paw out of the cage and tapped me. We were in love immediately!
Recently, there has been a stray cat coming around our house, antagonizing Meli through the patio door. Meli gets really riled and aggressive when the cat came around. April 18, 2012 was a beautiful day, and we had the doors and windows open. The cat came around again that evening. Meli and the other cat started fighting through the screen, and by the time I got to the door, Meli had actually opened the screen door, and took off after the other cat.
We didn’t see which way he went, and it was getting dark. My husband walked around with a flashlight, but was unable to find Meli. We left food out, and I slept on the couch with the windows open, hoping Meli would find his scent and come home. The next morning, I walked the neighborhood, and searched to no avail. We left missing pet fliers around the neighborhood, prayed, and waited. The night I put out the fliers, a neighbor called, saying Meli was in their yard, but he was gone by the time I got there. We continued to leave food out, searched the yard, and even rented a live trap, hoping to lure him home.
Two weeks passed with no word on Meli. I contacted neighbors, veterinary clinics, humane societies, and city animal control, and no one had seen him.
On day 15, I was home with my kids, and the phone rang; it was HomeAgain. The operator had my neighbor, Jake, on the line. He had Meli. I was shocked! We talked for a few moments, and Jake agreed to bring Meli to my house. He pulled into my driveway a few minutes later, and I was able to hold my Meli again! He looked pretty good for being outside for two weeks. He lost a little weight, but other than that, he looked just fine. He even still had his collar and bandanna on!
Once Meli was inside, he went straight for the food bowl, and ate like he had never eaten before. He inspected the house, and settled in to his favorite spot on the back of the couch, looking out the window.
We’re so glad to have him home! I don’t think we would have found him without HomeAgain!
