What I really wanted was another cockatiel. The 'tiel at the shelter, however, had been adopted. Her companion, a green-cheeked conure, was still available. I looked at him. He looked at me. I said, "Okay." I have quite the flock of mostly rescued birds in my house, but Zanzibar was always a loner. He ate well, played with his toys, loved looking out the window at his world, but never made friends with any of the other birds, though he'd come from a multi-bird home. Then I brought home two baby English budgies. The male, Stephen Colbird, is an outgoing little thing, and one day he invited himself into Zan's cage. I was a bit nervous, since even big English budgies are smaller than conures, Zan is getting old and crotchety, and Colbird can be incredibly annoying when he gets started. To my surprise, Zanzibar welcomed the attention. The two are now bff's, grooming each other, playing, and in general just hanging out.
