Leap of Faith
I always liked older men. So in 2004 I decided it was the right time to adopt a dog and I thought a mature dog of about 4 years of age would be about right.
Through Petfinder I found Father Joe, a priest who, because he was relocating to another parish in New York City whose monsignor was not a dog-lover, was being forced to find good homes for his two dogs. The photos on Petfinder showed Midnight a 7 year old Flat Coated Retriever mixed breed and Bouche an 8 year old Golden Retriever mixed breed. Honestly, Midnight's photo was a lot more flattering then Bouche's and, after all, Midnight was a little closer to the 4 year old preferred age range.
So, after a call to Father Joe we planned a meeting in a nearby dog run. Arriving early with a friend we watched as this giant of a man who looked more like a former US Marine then a priest opened up the dog run gate. I stood entranced as Midnight came right up to me and, like a man who has seen an ugly blind date for the first time, he turned and ran away.
But, then there was the big red dog, Bouche, whose eyes locked with mine and seemed never to let go. He let me rub his belly and even take him out for a walk around the small inner-city park. When we returned I had removed the "For Adoption" orange vest that he had worn and told Father Joe that I was taking the leap of faith and adopting Bouche, my forever dog.
This summer (2010) Bouche will turn 14.
