Meet Fabio and Harley Pigg

Harley Pigg and Fabio are a pair who arrived at different times but who became friends at their foster home. Harley Pigs was born from an accidental litter after his former guardian bought two mis-sexed guinea pigs off Craigslist. This person decided not to keep Harley because of his pink eyes, and dropped him off at a farm supply store for rehoming. Harley remained at this store for weeks, living in a small cage in the back, next to crickets and other "feeders." Harley was terrified of all the sounds around him, the prying eyes, and countless fingers reaching into his cage. Despite being available to ANY person with $20 or free with purchase of the cage he was living in, Harley continued to wait, alone and apprehensive about the future, until Empty Cages stepped in and convinced the store manager to surrender him into our care. Now, safe in one of our foster homes, Harley has learned to trust humans and appreciate being held, petted, and having room to run and engage in all kinds of acrobatic moves! Harley probably realizes how lucky he is, as he runs to the edge of his enclosure at the sound of his foster mom’s voice and, once picked up, fills her hands and arms with little kisses.

Fabio arrived to us after being found abandoned in a park by a fellow cat rescuer in Brooklyn. Fabio and the female friend he was dumped with were terrified when they arrived to us, and it took a while for them to slowly adjust to human kindness and touch. While more comfortable now, Fabio is still timid and tentative with new people, but he is making progress everyday. He now allows his foster mom to pick him up, and he will happily sit nestled against her or in front of her whenever grooming is involved. Fabio's long mane requires daily brushing to remain untangled and clean, and while guinea pigs are efficient self-groomers, long-haired ones require baths and even trimming from time to time as their coats can drag and easily become soiled. Since Fabio was abandoned outside, he required a bath to clean his coat soon after arriving to us, but despite any apprehension he may have been experiencing, he blissfully sat while being pampered, expressing his likes and dislikes in different ways and even taking the styling in his own paws once his coat had been toweled, brushed and blow-dried. This handsome boy is starving for human attention and he will reward a gentle and patient human with all the love he has to give. Fabio is generally quiet but he is starting to find his voice, coached by the older piggies in his foster home. He soon bonded with Harley Pigs, and they are now looking for a home together. The boys are approximately 1 year old.
