Meet Winky

W.A.R.M. had an emergency plea for a momma dog who couldn't feed her pups that showed up to a house in a very rural area. When our volunteer went to pick her up, Winky came walking up behind her. As soon as the volunteer saw Winky had an injured eye, she knew she couldn't leave the dog behind. According to the person who lived there, Winky wandered up to the same house as a stray a few days before the momma dog had her pups. As submissive as she is, she protected this momma from another stray that was an aggressive male. We think this is how her eye was injured. It has healed amazingly on its own and does not need to be stitched up. She just needs lubricating eye drops 3x a day until it's completely healed.
Winky was literally thrown into the world that day. It was her first car ride, first vet visit, first time on a leash, first time getting flea meds on her back, first time going through gates, first time in a building, kennel and crate. It was obvious she had lived her life outside. She was nervous of EVERYTHING but she got through it trusting the volunteers who offered lots of treats for reinforcement. It was amazing to see this scared dog power through her fears trusting strangers. It only took 1 day for her to start giving us kisses.
She is such a sweet girl and she loves to meet new people, dogs and cats. She is a very active girl that has to go to a home with another dog, preferably one that plays hard like she does. She is not delicate, she's a big goof who likes run and wrestle.
When she is scared or nervous, she immediately goes down, as close to the ground as she can get. She is extremely skittish of loud noises and will try to bolt. If she's inside, she will cower and find a place to hide, usually her crate. Her adopters need to understand her quirks and have a tight grip on her at all times while walking. She was in a foster home for a few days after being spayed and everything about the neighborhood scared her at first, car doors shutting, people locking cars, dogs barking in the distance. It took her a few days to adjust, once she realized these sounds meant no harm. But at the same time, if there is another dog, she will follow their lead. When she walked with another dog, she was absolutely fine. When she walked by herself, she was very nervous. Not only does she need a doggie brother or sister, but she needs a family who will take the time to show her the world isn't as scary as her past has been.
