Our Mission
Why Do We Insist That You Adopt 2 Kittens Instead of Just One?
We’ve heard all the reasons why you can only adopt one kitten, but we know that for the health and happiness of the kittens, mental, social, emotional, and physical health, you need to take two. And for YOUR mental health as well!
1. Kittens do four things: they play, they eat, they sleep, and they poop. Of these four, two of them are done 100% of the time with a sibling: playing and sleeping. AND, many times, the other two are done with a sibling as well. They need that security and interaction to become well socialized cats.
2. Kittens learn limits from other kittens. When playing, they learn not to bite hard, to retract their claws when playing, and how aggressive is too aggressive. Kittens raised without other kittens usually become biters and use their claws to do real damage. We see this all the time when we get lone kittens or even older cats raised alone. It takes a long time to undo this behavior, and about the only way is to put them with another kitten.
3. Kittens reinforce litter box habits for their siblings. Most kittens love the litter box and will play in it, but as they get older, that may change. However, when you have two, they will often follow each other to the box. And when one goes, the other follows suit.
4. Meal time is better when shared – and if you have a picky eater, then having two will cure that. Where one goes, the other goes – and that includes to have a bite.
5. Nothing is more energetic and playful than a young kitten – and no human has the time and energy it takes to entertain a kitten. It’s just not physically possible. If you want to sleep at night, you need to have two kittens so they can wear each other out. A bored and lonely kitten will become destructive and get into anything and everything. We have many kittens returned because of this.
6. If you want a confident and social cat, you need to provide the setting for that to happen. Kittens that have appropriate interaction with their litter mates are much more likely to develop into confident and social adult cats. Even a shy kitten will learn to be more confident from a sibling.
7. As a human, you just can’t provide the appropriate level of play: you can’t be ready and willing to play, at any time, 24 hours a day. You can’t chase and roll and romp with your kitten (maybe for 10 minutes at a time), and you won’t be endlessly fascinated by the same things the kitten is. You are more like mom – not a sibling.
8. You can’t socialize appropriately. You don’t have claws, you don’t bite, and so you can’t show a kitten what it feels like so they learn what’s right and wrong.
9. Older cats can do some teaching, but most aren’t interested in the level of activity a kitten needs. This is why we say that you can adopt one kitten if you have a cat 5 years or younger in the home. It’s not ideal, but it’s better. Dogs cannot socialize kittens, so even if you have a dog that loves kittens, it won’t be the same.
10. Kittens come in litters for a reason – they need each other! We never raise kittens alone. As soon as they are out of quarantine, we put them with other kittens – and it’s so rewarding to see how much kittens love kittens. Take our word for it – you will never regret adopting two kittens. You may never watch TV again because the entertainment value of two kittens will be the best show happening in your home!
