Willy's Story
Our sweet Willy boy came into the rescue after being found as a stray on a golf course in Safford, Arizona. He is a calm young dog, estimated to be around 18 months old. By DNA test he is half Basset Hound and half Australian shepherd/mini American shepherd mix). He is a little bit of a low rider (the Basset Hound in him) and weighs about 35 pounds. He is bigger than our beagles, but he is not a large dog.

Willy is crate-trained and does not display separation anxiety. He does get into things when left unsupervised so at this point in his development it's best to put him in the crate when he's home alone. When he's older he might be fine to let him free roam when left alone but for now, since he's so young and needs to be crated, we are looking for a home for him where he won't routinely be alone for more than 3-4 hours at a time.

Willy gets along well with other dogs, doesn't pull on a leash on walks, and is non reactive. He does like to go for walks, and when we see another dog, he will watch them but doesn't bark at them. He LOVES to play with toys, and will take all of them out of the basket and leave them around the house.

He has been in two foster homes, one with and one without other dogs (he moved to the second one so the first home could take in another dog with medical needs). He got along great with the other dogs in his first home and would thrive in a home with another young or young-at-heart and playful dog. Although he is never aggressive when trying to play, his puppy-like energy might be a little much at times for a senior or non-playful dog.

As an only dog in his current foster home, he does need some extra physical and mental exercise. He's completed a beginning obedience training course and short training sessions to practice what he's learned have been really helpful to tire him out a little more after his morning walk.

Willy is available for adoption again after a stretch of persistent digestive problems. Thankfully testing ruled out various serious issues and left him with a tentative diagnosis of stress colitis/sensitive stomach. He's back on the mend again but his adopter(s) will need to be careful about his diet and will also need to continue to work on his 'leave it' command to prevent scavenging on walks. His foster will provide a supply of his current food so that he can either stay on that or transition slowly to something else.

Willy's adoption fee is $300, and he is adoptable within a 120 mile radius of Tucson. Preference given to applicants who can commit to continuing his training. If you're interested in Willy, please fill out an application here - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1SnhudHYFJaPfZyCeKy36-9pbowOVOI-xrX4TIiSIxl4/edit?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR1Uc9yMERX-_teuct1HZG_ODm3Z2-VhTzSnYJR4A9jF21ul_NrO9wcHL58_aem_AUzzB2CKCXF_iT96mzZk_2__gmgTSiyLWL0KmvzpaymzmwaCqVl_5ToqbSTv6NK8iD6e0bBECHmqAcMHZAv4naHd.
