Meet Wade

5/11/20 In keeping with current safety guidelines, our shelter is closed to visitors and the majority of our dogs are in foster care with volunteers. While social distancing restrictions have slowed our adoption process (requiring patience on everyone's part!), we continue working with homes to ensure the right fit for families and dogs alike. If you are looking to adopt within the week, we are unable to accommodate … but if you are prepared to take your time in finding just-the-right canine partner for your family and lifestyle, we’d love to hear from you!

UPDATE 4/22. A little more info from Wade's foster home:

Good habits: Very loving, goes in crate without issue, does not bark unless someone comes to the house.

Bad habits: Jumps on people to get attention. Can be wary of new people coming into a home. Does get on furniture but I let him because he likes to be next to me. (Only bad if his forever family doesn't want him on the couch!)

Training needs: Needs to learn some basic commands. I've got him to the point where I can put food in front of him and he waits for permission to eat. He can sit on command, but still needs some basic obedience (come, stay, down, leave it, etc). Though he walks well on leash, he has a tendency to sway and get under your feet. I think he would thrive on agility training, he is very fast and agile.

UPDATE 3/28 Good things can come out of something even as horrible as the coronavirus. Just ask any of our lucky shelter dogs who are being temporarily fostered in the homes of our huge-hearted volunteers. Wade is having a ball with his foster dad who reports: "He sleeps next to me every night and wakes me up with kisses. Every time I sit down to do anything he's basically in my lap." (See picture of Wade waiting for him to THROW THE BALL!)

UPDATE 3/15 Wade's life motto: "Life's a ball!" This little dude love, love, LOVES to fetch, and he is a master at it! He will chase tennis balls forever if you let him. What really makes him a star is that he'll bring the ball back AND drop it right at your feet without even being asked! He is hands down the best fetcher at STAF. Maybe there's a future MLB star-to-be out there looking for a training partner?

This isn't Wade's first rescue-rodeo. After being adopted from a county shelter in May of 2019, he was returned six months later for "rolling in cow manure and then jumping on people." If that makes you chuckle a little, then you must appreciate a sense of humor in your dogs. Which means you may be Wade's type of human!

This kid has one cool, fun-loving personality and is always wearing a big smile. If you're looking for a comic sidekick/wing man, he's your guy to keep life not boring. Around 2 years old and 40 pounds, Wade could use a little manners-polishing and obedience work. He'd love a fenced yard and active humans to provide for his big energy. Probably not a great first-time dog ... he'll do best with a dog-savvy family able to steer him clear of life's tempting cow patties and take in stride his, uh ... stinkier moments.

• All of our animals are spayed/neutered and current on shots.
• We do not do same-day adoptions; we ask that you return for a follow-up visit before taking an animal home.
• You must be 21 years or older to adopt from STAF.
• We require a 4-foot-tall physical fence for homes with children under the age of 11. We also may require a physical fence for specific dogs on a case-by-case basis, depending on each dog’s behavior and exercise needs.
• Due in part to increasing coyote activity/incidents in the area and the difficulty of predicting how a dog will respond to invisible fence training, we can not adopt to homes with invisible fences.
• We do request vet and personal references.
• We can facilitate adoptions within a 75-mile radius of our Cincinnati-based shelter.

Please visit www.STAF.org for visiting hours, a downloadable application, and additional information.
