Smiley's Story
Backstory for Smiley

Smiley found himself in an overcapacity animal control facility that euthanizes due to lack of space. He was found as a stray, severely matted from head to toe with hair casts on his legs. Animal Saints Rescue Society was asked to pull him to safety to give him a second chance at life.

Get to Know Smiley

age: 3-4
breed: Shih Tzu Lhasa Apso blend
weight: approximately 17-18 pounds

Vaccines and treatments:
Rabies
Bordetella
DHPP, part one and two
Dewormer
Flea/tick prevention

Other tests and procedures:
Neuter surgery
Heart worm test - negative
Fecal test - negative
Bloodwork - overall normal ranges showing healthy organs

Additional procedures:
Microchipped

Requested adoption donation fee is only $800. He is one of the most handsome and soulful Shih Tzu we have helped in quite some time. He is a rare blend of brown and white with a brown nose. He has possibly Lhasa Apso in the mix as well.

PLEASE NOTE: Smiley’s hair will grow as it is not fur. He will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care.

Smiley is very patient for his baths and grooming. He’s learning that brushing actually feels good. He hasn’t had much experience with grooming in his short life, but he is quickly learning that it’s a good thing.

Personality

Smiley is incredibly sweet, and he is very ready to have his person. He was fearful of humans when he first arrived, not sure if he could trust. He now meets our volunteers with such love. It has been moving to see the sadness in his eyes fade and be replaced by a calmness and joy for life.

Smiley feels safe here, perhaps for the first time in his life. We see a smile on his face now, and his name suits him perfectly.

Smiley is a young adult and is agile. He loves running in our sanctuary garden for fun. A fenced-in yard is ideal for Smiley, as well as leashed walks in quiet neighborhoods without a lot of dogs passing by -- at least not a first while he gets used to being on a harness and leash.

Smiley is just learning how to walk on a harness and leash. He has been taught "sit" and the recall word “here” in our sanctuary. He is working on stay. He now reliably sits for his breakfast, snacks, and dinner.

Basic foundational skills training sessions with a certified professional positive reinforcement trainer are required for Smiley’s adoption. Just a few classes are needed, and they are fun. It’s an excellent way to connect with your newly adopted Saint, too.

You can enjoy meeting Smiley in his short film: https://vimeo.com/1153430387

Ideal Home

It is ideal for Smiley to be in a laidback and quiet home. He is hesitant around boisterous people with loud voices and gravitates toward our quieter and sensitive volunteers. Someone who works from home or is active and retired is ideal for Smiley. He will especially thrive in a home that can give him companionship day and night.

Older children are case by case — only those who have experience living with dogs, understand dog behavior, and have great respect and love for them will be considered.

Smiley gets along with dogs with proper introductions. He has learned how to play with Frankie who is listed separately for adoption. It is not a requirement for him to have siblings, but he would appreciate the friendship of other dogs in his life.

Plan on sharing your sofa and bedroom with Smiley. He will want to be by your side, no matter where you are and what you are doing. He now loves hugs and seeks them out.

Love and Commitment

At Animal Saints Rescue Society, our goal is to keep dogs out of overcapacity animal control facilities and out of a re-homing cycle. We place the dogs we save into lifetime families. With this in mind, we seek families who understand that an adoption is a lifetime commitment.

The families who adopt from us believe that love is not a feeling, it is a decision. Some humans still believe it’s okay to try out a dog for a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years — then discard when they get bored or don’t want to deal with emotional or physical needs.

We are looking for the empathetic, kind, and patient humans in this world who view these Animal Saints as family. They do not view them as subordinates to humans or mere possessions but view them as partners in life. They are committed to giving them a safe and loving home with dignity and respect.

Will that family be you? We look forward to finding out and receiving your application!
