Scooby's Story

Foster in Mobile, Alabama

Scooby has every reason in the world not to trust people… and yet, he chooses love anyway.

This incredibly special boy came into rescue alongside his siblings, Scrappy and Luna, after an extreme neglect case that is honestly hard to put into words. They were confined to small wire crates, left without food or water, and forced to survive in their own filth. When they were finally brought to safety, all three were emaciated—less than half of what they should have weighed.

And still… Scooby is one of the sweetest, most gentle souls you will ever meet.

Scooby is estimated to be around 4 to 5 years old, and he is the definition of a gentle giant and a total gentleman. In just five weeks in foster care, he has blossomed into a happy, affectionate, and curious boy who is learning what it means to truly live. He absolutely lives for love and will lean his whole body into you for scratches like he’s trying to melt right into your arms. It’s his signature move, and it’s impossible not to fall for.

He’s discovering the joy of toys (thanks to his siblings showing him the ropes), and his zoomies are coming in strong. Scooby loves being outside—whether he’s stretching his legs, splashing in the pool to cool off, or happily drinking straight from the hose like it’s the best thing ever. It’s like he’s making up for all the moments he never got to experience before.

Scooby is currently living with a foster family that has two other Great Danes, and he blended in with them immediately. He truly enjoys having canine companions and takes comfort in their presence, but he would also be perfectly happy as an only dog soaking up all the love for himself.

He is potty trained and has picked up house manners beautifully. Even though he can absolutely see what’s on your counters, he has learned not to touch—though you may find a few drool marks left behind as evidence that he considered it. He is very food motivated, which makes him eager to please and easy to continue training, and he shows zero signs of food aggression. Because Scooby came to us so severely underweight and starved, he did tend to inhale his food without much chewing at first but now that he knows food will never be withheld, he’s finally started relaxing while he eats.

While loud noises can still make him a little unsure, Scooby doesn’t panic—he simply seeks out his person for reassurance, which says so much about how deeply he wants to trust and connect. Thunder and rain don’t seem to bother him at all. He walks well on a leash, has great recall in the yard, and prefers to stay close to his people rather than wander.

Scooby adores other dogs and often looks to them for confidence in new situations. He has done well with everyone he’s met so far. Due to his size and his affectionate “lean and flop” style of loving, a home without very small children might be the best fit. He hasn’t been tested with cats yet but has shown no interest in small animals like squirrels and does great with a 25 lb beagle mix.

The crate isn’t his favorite place—and honestly, after everything he’s been through, that’s understandable. He’d much rather be curled up next to you on the couch, and he has proven he can be trusted loose in the home without issue.

Scooby’s confidence is growing more every single day. Watching him discover comfort, safety, and joy has been nothing short of incredible.

He survived the worst, and now he’s ready for the best.

If you’re looking for a loyal, loving, soulful companion who will stick by your side, lean into your heart, and remind you daily what resilience looks like… Scooby is your boy.

Scooby is neutered, fully vaccinated and chipped. His adoption fee is $350. To read over the adoption requirements before applying to adopt Scooby, please go to nwflgdr.com/adopt.

Please note: NWFLGDR does not transport. All adopters are required to pick up the dog in person from his or her foster home.
