Patty's Story
Welcome Patty (our "interesting ears" long legged princess) to our group of adoptable dogs! She was released to us a few months back now and we have found her to be good with all the volunteers. She's curious, happy & likes company, a little excitable and and needs training (manners) but a great dog! She's a year-ish old... Patty is easy to greet at her kennel. We are working on her walking manners and using a prong collar works. It doesn't hurt her and keeps her walking well. She has even gone hiking with volunteers! An adorable, pretty girl, who could be ok in a home with older children (12+ y/o) - we feel she would be best as your only dog. She can play with another dog at the shelter, however, when she was adopted out to a family with a dog, she got into a fight at the home. So they returned her to us. We do not know how she would react to a cat. Patty did great hiking with two volunteers, only pulled once or twice when she caught wind or heard wildlife. But was redirected and fine quickly. This is an all around happy, fun pup who needs some training. But then don't we all ?

Please remember ALL dogs and cats once adopted need time to decompress in your home. Focus on creating a calm, safe, and structured environment to help them adjust. Take it slow. This gives you time to get to know their true personality, plus for them to get used to their new home and routine. Thank you!

Stop by to fill out an adoption application and spend as much time as you like with our dogs. We do not adopt first come; we always select the best placement for our animals. Please call your veterinarian to permit them to speak with us for our vet check. If you rent, bring proof (lease/contract) that you are allowed to have a dog. If you have a dog at home, a meet-and-greet will be scheduled for the second visit. We offer a free session with our trainer, Canine Cooperative, once an adoption is finalized.

Our adoption fee is $150 for dogs. This includes heartworm and Lyme testing, flea/tick preventatives, deworming, age-appropriate vaccines, and spay/neuter if six months or older. If they are too young, we require a $50 deposit that will be refunded upon proof that the pet has been altered.

For more info on our shelter and available pets, check us out online:

West Milford Animal Shelter Society
Lycosky Drive, West Milford, NJ 07480
(973) 728-2859

Visiting Hours
Mon - Fri: 10 - 1
Wed Night: 7:30 - 9
Weekends: 10 - 3
