Murphy is tiny, 2-year-old Maltese/Poodle mix. He was surrendered to our local shelter by his owner. Reportedly, Murphy was vomiting daily and chronically losing weight but his owners could not afford veterinary care.

We have done quite a bit of diagnostic testing on Murphy including multiple rounds of bloodwork, an abdominal ultrasound and a sedated exam of his mouth and nose. There is no clear cause for his chronic regurgitation or failure to thrive. Some of the things that have been ruled out are megasophagus, liver shunt, and an oral/nasal fistula. The presumption is that Murphy has delayed gastric emptying coupled with food sensitivities. We have experimented with some different foods and feeding regimens and he has improved slightly. He is fed 3-4 small meals daily and taking an inexpensive medication that somewhat improves his digestion. Murphy will likely require special care and feeding for the rest of his life, so whoever adopts him needs to understand this and be willing to go the distance with him.

Murphy packs a big personality in his tiny frame. He is slow to warm up to new people and can be nippy with strangers. He requires an adult-only home so if you have children of your own or some who visit regularly, he’s not the dog for you. Once you make friends with Murphy, he is your best buddy. He follows you everywhere and wants to be in your business all the time. He loves toys and will steal your slippers if you aren’t careful. Murphy is currently fostered with three other dogs and to be honest, he isn’t crazy about any of them. He would ideally prefer to be an only dog, but he might be okay with one other low-key small dog. Murphy really would love a human all to himself. He is so adorable and quite the character. If you can look past his medical issues, you are sure to fall for his charm.
