Meet Mitchell
Oh where do we start with Mitchell – the boy with a heart of gold, ears that live their own life, and a weirdness you can only fully appreciate when you meet him. Mitchell has been in his foster home since the day he was born. He has always been a little different, and a very vocal boy – like all shepherds strive to be. Mitchell is neutered, up to date on all age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, heart-worm negative, and micro-chipped! He was born July 2022 and currently weighs 40 pounds.
Mitchell’s foster mom likes to joke that he is a rare silver shepherd – hey they really do exist! We have no way to know what breed this unique boy is for sure, but he really does look like a shepherd, sound like a shepherd, and behave like a shepherd. If you have experience with shepherds, you fully understand. You also understand their personalities and how they can be a little “special”, shall we
say. He wants to be worried about the world, while also being a social butterfly –
an interesting combination for sure! Mitchell loves other dogs and his personality has really taken off with strangers too. Unfortunately, Mitchell was born with bad hips, which we didn’t know until he was around 4 months old and started walking with a bunny hop. In late November he had his first FHO surgery and then in late December he had his second FHO surgery. It takes several months for his hips to fully recover from the surgeries, but he is doing great! He has a couple of best friend foster siblings that he plays with and he’s started going out to play with the full pack recently. He’s still trying to learn that his hips are fixed, so he walks a little odd, but that just goes with his personality! Mitchell does get nervous with new things, but as his confidence continues to grow, we know that nervousness will get less and less.
Mitchell is working on potty training and kennel training. He will need a home with a routine and patience as he finishes figuring out potty training, leash training and just overall learning how the world works. As far as his healing from his surgeries – he is healed on the outside and the inside will continue to heal over the next several months. He’s not restricted on activity, but he will need watched around rambunctious dogs just to make sure they don’t hurt him. Mitchell will be a good sized dog, so he will benefit from some joint supplements as he ages. He may never be a super high energy guy, but more of a couch potato, hang out with his humans kind of guy. Mitchell wants to be a house dog, a true family companion, and would do best in a lower-key home. Staying active throughout his life will help him, but he won’t ever be a marathoner!
