Mercury's Story

Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement-Kennel License #2617

Could he do well with kids? Yes, with children around 14 years, on a kid-by-kid basis.

Could he do well with other dogs? Mercury can be selective with other dogs. Multiple meets might be necessary.

Has this dog lived with cats? Unknown. While he showed hesitation in new situations, he communicated his discomfort clearly, such as becoming stiff when unsure about play. He relaxed with a different approach, especially when toys were introduced. Although he preferred to keep the toys to himself, he used body-blocking and gentle mouthing to signal he wanted space, but it was easy to retrieve them once his interest waned.

He can be cautious around strangers, initially displaying defensive barking but warming up with proper handling. He enjoyed attention but disliked his tail being touched. When frustrated, particularly after being alone, he can become highly aroused, jumping up or grabbing at the leash. Mercury showed discomfort around another dog, becoming offensive/defensive when overwhelmed, and struggled to recover in its presence.

---

For more resources to help with any step of your adoption journey go to: https://go.petadoptiongateway.com/LycomingDT

Lycoming County SPCA's Adoption Policy
If interested in a pet at the Lycoming County SPCA, please fill out an adoption application. The application is available on our website: lycomingspca.org. We may require additional steps in our process such as a home visit, permission from parents, or other additional requests. We appreciate your patience as we complete your adoption. Before adding a new member to your family, please consider the following: Many pets live 10 to 15 years. How old will you be? How old will your children be? Is there a chance you could move in the next 10 years? Are you willing to restrict your choice of housing to accommodate a pet? If the pet is for a child are you willing to assume the care of the pet? Children must have parental guidance to care for a pet regardless of their age. Each breed of animal has genetic characteristics that need to be considered. Have you researched the breed that you are interested in? Are you financially prepared for a pet? Consider the following expenses: spaying or neutering, basic veterinary care, flea preventative, heart worm preventative, license, food, grooming.
