Maxwell Smart #86 Labrador Retriever Warrington, PA

Hi, I’m Maxwell Smart; I’m a 1 - 2 year old neutered, male black lab mix. I’m a Little Guy at only 56#. I’ve just gotten my medical release from the Orthopedic Surgeon so I’m looking for a new place to chew my bones. I have lots of energy to run & play or go for walks but I do settle on the couch or a dog bed if I’ve had enough exercise.
Brookline rescued me from the shelter in March because I needed medical attention. I was brought into the shelter as a stray and I was favoring my left front leg and right hind leg so the shelter was looking for a rescue to help out. Brookline had a vet check me out and he took some x-rays. It turns out I had broken my left wrist and had a torn cruciate ligament in my right knee. The left wrist was almost healed and in good position so I just had to rest that (no running or playing). I had surgery to repair the right knee and I was put on crate rest! Yikes, locked up all day long and only out for potty breaks? Well it was a long 5 weeks but then I was allowed short leash walks (5-10 min, 3 times a day). After 8 weeks I was allowed to go for 15-20 min walks but still no running or playing with the other dogs. I finally got my medical release last week and I’ve been RUNNING ever since.
I’m UTD on all of my shots, neutered, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. The Orthopedic Surgeon says I can resume normal activity but I should have regular exercise, not just weekend warrior activity.
I LOVE everybody! I’ve seen kids of all ages at Brookline events. When I go for walks, I try to meet as many people or dogs as I can. It’s only fair because everybody loves me back. A few of my neighbors just sit down in the driveway so I can get in their lap for a lovefest! I love to lick and nibble on ears.
I get along good with other dogs and I love to chase and play with them. I’m currently living with 2 dogs, and we’ve had parties with 9 dogs, no problems here, the more the merrier I say. I did get overly excited with the 7# Pomeranian (What is that?) that was here and I didn’t pay much attention to her warning growls. Foster Mom put me inside for a while and I was better behaved after a short nap. I did see a cat through the window at the Pet Store and I was interested but I didn’t lunge or bark. Foster Mom thinks I would probably chase a cat in play and ignore their warnings like I did with that tiny little dog.
I know SIT and I’m learning WAIT but it’s so hard. I love to go in the car but Foster Mom says I need to be restrained or I’ll jump into the front seat. I just get so excited! I do pull on walks but I walk better on a front clip harness or prong collar. I’ve also gotten much better since I’ve been allowed to run and play. Foster Mom says it helps that I have a release for all my puppy energy. I also have a tendency to try to get out the door when someone is coming in the house. I just want to be the first person to greet them, that’s all. There is a gate on the porch so I can’t take off.
Okay so Foster Mom says I have to tell the WHOLE TRUTH, I LOVE to chew. I mostly chew bones but I’ve also chewed through a lot of stuffed toys, balls, some of the Tough, Non-destructible toys, blankets in my crate and dog beds. I also have an obsession with shoes but I’ve never had any success in keeping them so I haven’t destroyed them. I tend to get mouthy when I get over excited and try to chew on Foster Mom’s or company’s arms. Again, a little nap in my crate and I come out much calmer.
