Maverick Cattle Dog & Border Collie Mix Manhattan, KS

Maverick, the 2-year-old castrated male heeler/border collie mix. He is up-to-date on all vaccinations.

Maverick is a great, smart and sweet dog, just very high energy that his current owner doesn't have time for with school and work. He is great with kids, great with people, great with other dogs, and is crate trained, house trained, and knows a lot of commands – currently he waits for his food and needs a command to be allowed to eat it, won’t go in the kitchen unless allowed, kennels up, sits, stays, comes, etc. His current owners has been taking him to MuttSchool and he has proven to excel in group classes.

He needs a permanent home where he can be exercised daily. He needs a routine and a job! He is scared of bicycles, but on leash he behaves. Off leash he will run up to the bike and bark at them, which his owner cautions new owners about letting him off leash before training with that happens. He has great recall off leash, however.

He would do great with other dogs, as long as they aren’t very high energy like him; although he burns energy playing with them, he gets into a hyper-excitable state that is difficult to bring him “back down to normal”. He ignores cats 75% of the time, but 25% of the time he seems to want to play with them and the cats usually aren’t very receptive to that!
