Meet Maia

MAIA
Introducing sweet Maia-(name means warrior)

DOB July 22/14, Maia is a precious apricot Cocker Spaniel female, now fully vetted including spay, dental, vaccinations, microchip, bloodwork and hernia repair surgery.

Maia is ready for her own family now where she will have another suitable canine companion , and someone not away from home for more than 4-5hrs daily.
Maia is also great with dog savvy cats who are welcome in her new home.

Due to her shyer nature, we are seeking a home without children or loud teenagers.

This precious soul was marked (literally with spray paint) for death after she was used up and tossed aside after producing many many litters for a commercial breeder.
Maia arrived into our care in the nick of time, with a serious inguinal hernia (now repaired!) horribly infected ears, matted fur and overgrown nails, all from neglect.

This wee warrior girl is such a gentle soul, she aced her surgery and recovery and is blossoming in her foster home, in excellent health and ready for her new life

Maia has been learning to walk on a leash for the first time and currently goes for short walks up and down our street. She is adapting well but is still nervous when leash walking, all sounds and experiences are still new to her after life in a barn as a breeding dog.
She loves to play fetch and loves her treats, which helps with her ongoing training.

Maia loves attention from everyone. She can be shy at first but a belly rub and a cuddle with treats to entice her are a great way to break the ice with her.

Maia doesn't like other dogs near her food or treats so she is fed separately from the other dogs. This also allows our dogs time to eat, as Maia is always interested in whatever is in their bowls too.

Maia doesn't care for the crate at all, but will sleep in it when needed, and has been crated during the day while we've been out. She's not destructive when left out loose.

Maia can be left alone but prefers the company of her people, so it can take a bit of time for her to relax and settle. She will get a bit worked up when we leave initially but will calm and settle fairly quickly

Housetraining is a work in progress, but Maia is doing much better now with this. Her new family will need to be consistent with frequent outside trips to set her up for success in her new home and be patient and understanding if she has accidents.

TRANSPORTATION?
Maia usually travels in a crate but does get car sick/suffers from motion sickness. We use homeopathic travel drops which help alot . She did best when in her crate and someone was also in the back seat talking to her and petting her to keep her calm
SHE IS NOT A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR SNOWBIRD TRAVELLERS OR FREQUENT TRIPS such as cottagers every weekend etc, due to her motion sickness.

Maia needs a patient owner who will understand that everything is still new to her. Her sweet demeanor and love for affection will win hearts quickly. A gentle and confident canine companion would also be a wonderful plus for Maia as she would have a friend to learn from.

Notes:
* Another suitable canine companion is desired for Maia in her new home to help
her continued confidence building and companionship. She has lived with large and small breeds and is very dog friendly. She does not enjoy puppies
*Pools and ponds must be separately fenced from yard
* Dog doors are not permitted
* Families with a yard-fencing is mandatory for Maia due to her sheltered previous life and flight risk
*Owned or rented homes welcome with landlord's permission

Hobo Haven is located in St Jacobs Ontario.
For approved families, we require in person meetings in St Jacobs ON after your application has been approved.

If you are not willing to drive to this location to meet our dogs after you are approved, please do not apply. We do not meet elsewhere nor deliver dogs and do not permit meetings until our screening process has been completed.

If you are interested in applying to adopt a dog from Hobo Haven Rescue, please use this link to submit an application https://hobohavenrescue.ca/dog-adoption-application

Maia's adoption fee is a minimum donation of $600
The adoption fee is only a tiny fraction of our expenses for her extensive vetting, dental surgery and care expenses.

Adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip, age appropriate vaccinations, fecal testing, dentals if required, deworming if needed, Heartworm and Tick disease testing, bloodwork, Advantage prevention, and all medical treatments and surgeries required during their time with us.

For anyone possibly interested in adopting from Hobo Haven, here are a few, but not all, criteria to be aware of:

We require all serious applicants to watched "Petfooled" which is a free documentary at this link https://tubitv.com/movies/494913/pet-fooled

Our motto is "know better/do better" and we ask all adoptive families to be as committed to providing our dogs with quality nutrition as they are to providing love. This documentary is not advertising, purely just educational.

An adoption application must be completed and approved, as well as a virtual home visit (Zoom during COVID), prior to meeting available dogs. All dogs are placed in loving foster homes during their time with us, we do not have a shelter to visit.

We do not allow applicants to visit until pre-approved for adoptions. All dogs are in private foster family homes, not a facility.

Any questions may be emailed to hobohavenpetrescue@gmail.com

Please do not ask us to make exceptions, we set these protocols and policies for the dog's best interests which are always our highest priority.

Emails are best, our volunteers work full time and are often not able to answer or return phone calls in a timely manner.
