Mabel D12654's Story
Mabel is dumped on the streets of Houston, and then hit by a car. A Good Samaritan saved her; she couldn't walk on her hind legs for several days, and it was determined she had a badly fractured pelvis. When her Texan Foster picked her up from the emergency vet in January 2026, she was terrified and in a lot of pain. Her trust was eventually won with the help of a yummy rotisserie chicken snack! She has grown and improved so much since then, she will need continued training for where to potty (making progress!) and will need some practice walking on a leash. She will never fully recover from the accident, but she can walk and play, she does well, but will be slightly painful if she 'overdoes' it.

Because of everything she's been through, Mabel takes a little while to warm up to people. With time and patience, she can be so loving and trusting. She's an amazing little dog. She's a little bit of an escape artist, so a fully secure backyard is important. Mabel has never met cats or kids and will be extremely cautious of any new humans or creatures in her space and may not be the best fit for a home with cats, critters or birds. Because of her timid demeanor, she may not do well in an apartment with shared hallways.

Her favorite times of day are meal time (which she barks like crazy for but is otherwise a quiet gal) and cuddle time, she would be with her person all the time if she could! Mabel really just needs cuddles, pets, playtime and the chance to get used to changes so she can really be comfortable to let her true light shine. If you're willing to give this girl the time and love she deserves, you're sure to receive it back tenfold!

Mabel is from Texas. They arrive in Minnesota on 10/10/2026 and will need to be picked up from the Ruff Start Rescue office in Princeton, MN between the hours of 9am and noon. Please plan for their arrival accordingly as we cannot accommodate pickups outside of this time frame. Since they haven't arrived yet, they are available exclusively through Ruff Start's Foster to Adopt (FTA) Program. Visit our Foster to Adopt Program page to learn more. Once they get to Minnesota, they might require further veterinary care. Ruff Start's veterinary suite is located in Princeton, MN, and, as the foster, you will be required to transport your dog to and from these vetting appointments.
