Meet Luke
Luke - Dachshund Mix - Male - 2 Years - www.twyla.org
Luke is between 1-2 years old Dachshund Mix; he has a beautiful silver brown coat that seems to glow in the sun when the silver reflects the light, He is 20-25 pounds, has lots of energy, and a lot of character. He loves kids, loves to play with other dogs, is housetrained, and does well on a leash. He is a very smart dog and likes to patrol the house and the yard to make sure all is in order. He barks at the doorbell, at meeting new people, and that is about it. He does bark a lot at the vacuum cleaner and likes to rush the Roomba and nip at it before running off. Otherwise, he is not much of a barker. He does love to snuggle and spoon in bed, and sit on your lap if you are seated on the couch or a comfy chair. He has been neutered, has a chip, has his shots, is heart worm free, and gets his monthly treatments to prevent heartworms and fleas.
Luke showed up with Simon in his foster's driveway on a very rainy, very cold day in early December. He was not really trusting of his foster at first but once she was able to put a leash on him, he seemed to take it all in stride and settled in with an attitude of “guess I am this lady’s dog!”. He barks more at men, especially tall men, and at the first meeting, he might try to nip at their shoes. If the man sits down, lets Luke smell and sniff him, and pets him gently, all is well after that.
Luke likes to be protective of ‘his family’ but not in an aggressive way. He is not crazy about strangers trying to grab at him, mess with his collar or leash, or pick him up. (He growls in those instances but has not tried to bite anyone. But once he knows you, he’ll let you do whatever you want!) He is curious, loving, loyal, playful, and assertive. He loves his buddy Simon. They play a lot, snooze together, and it is clear they ‘keep tabs’ on each other when they are running around the back yard or if we are out and about.
Luke's ideal home would be an active home, with kids or at least, active adults who would happily include him in their activities. He needs a house where people are there quite a bit (he would not do well with someone who works 12 hour days and depends on a dog sitter to stop by for 15-30 minutes daily to let him out and that is all). He needs human interaction on a steady basis. He loves to be around other dogs, would probably prefer to have another dog to live with - or a human that he can follow around all day.
