Lincoln's Story
Breed: English Setter mix
Sex: Male, neutered
Age: 7 years
Weight: 68 lbs.
Location: MD
Good with other dogs: Yes
Good with cats: Yes, has lived with 2 cats
Good with kids: Yes
Crate trained: No, see below
Housebroken: Yes
Health: Very good
Microchip: Yes

Lincoln is a gentleman through and through! While he is good with other dogs, Lincoln would rather be with people! He forms very strong bonds with his people, and really would prefer to go with you everywhere. He has excellent manners, and does not offer kisses or jump up on people. He will boop your nose, but only if you ask him to. He just wants to be wherever you are, and do whatever you’re doing. Whether it’s hikes in nature, a road trip in the car, or out on the boat, Lincoln is up for all of it.

He previously lived peacefully alongside two cats, and is good with other dogs. While Lincoln lives alone with his people now, he enjoys going to dog parks and also to doggie day care. Lincoln knows that squirrels are a dime a dozen, and so he can easily be dissuaded from pursuing them. This is NOT the case with rabbits, however. When he sees a rabbit he will “set” or freeze in place with one paw lifted, in typical Setter fashion. He can remain motionless like that for a very long time, and he always waits until the rabbit makes the first move. If he is in a safe area, he’s been allowed to give chase (the rabbit ALWAYS eludes him), and he always comes back.

Lincoln is very smart and enjoys learning. He knows many words and tricks: high-five, sit pretty, stand up, lie down, smoochy-boop (touch his nose to your nose). When walking on-leash, he also knows commands like sit, wait, find it, leave it, walk on, here, walk with me, potty, “find a place to poop”, go swimming, walk, dog park, mind your business, and so much more! All you need to say is “Lincoln, do you want to...?” and he is all ears!! He has also done nose-work classes, and has a good aptitude for it—he even located a dog park friend who had escaped his house and gotten lost! With additional training, he could probably enroll as a volunteer in “Dogs Finding Dogs” or become your foraging buddy.

If Lincoln has to stay home alone, he is best left to free-roam, as he does not do well in a crate. He can be trusted loose in the house, and if he needs to retreat, a closet with the door open does the trick!

Lincoln is in very good health, up-to-date on all shots, and takes monthly heartworm and flea and tick meds. Lincoln has several lumps on his chest and around the base of his neck. The vet has examined them and said they are benign lipomas and do not appear to cause him any issue or discomfort.

Lincoln is being returned to Rescue by his adoptive family. His family is devastated to have to rehome him, but an ongoing autoimmune condition of one of his people is triggered by animal dander.

Lincoln is an excellent companion and very eager to please his people. He would make an ideal partner for an active family that is available to spend time with him both at home and in outdoor activities.
