Laika was only 48lbs when we first pulled her off death row. A couple days later she almost died due to being anemic and had to stay at the vet for several days. It is hard to believe that this was how this girls journey started with us. She is now 85lbs and is STILL on the skinny side, but she looks better and better every day! Her coat is coming in more, she is starting to fill out, and her personality is really starting to shine through.

Laika has such a sweet and soulful face. Whatever her past life was, we don't think that she was ever properly cared for or had the opportunity to come inside. She dove headfirst into her new life though. She was eager to befriend the other dogs and started playing with them after only a few days. She discovered the joy of bones and loves chewing on them. She has figured out that the couch is quite comfortable and that she can get some awesome cuddle sessions on it while her foster family is watching TV.

Laika has good house manners and is completely potty trained. She has not been a big chewer and can be trusted to have free roam of the house, even if we are away. She loves attention and it is so fun watching the light come back into her eyes and seeing her start to fill out. She still has a lot of weight to put on, but she finally doesn't look like a skeleton with fur anymore. Laika has become more playful since she has been here, but overall she is on the calmer side. She enjoys playing with the other dogs, romping around outside, and chewing on bones...but she is also just as content to come up on the couch for cuddles and nap the day away sometimes.

If you are looking for a dog that is on the calmer side with spurts of playfulness...Laika is your girl! She does great with other dogs and pays no attention to the cats. We do expect her to be in or close to the 100lb range once she has put back on all her weight. We also expect that her coat will continue coming in as well. "

---------------------------------------------

I was all alone. Sometimes wandering the countryside...other times the streets. I don't know how I ended up there all by myself anymore. That part of my life is all a blur. All I know was that I was not cut out for the life of a stray. I had no idea how to keep myself fed and had become so skinny I looked like a rail. My coat had started to fall out due to malnutrition, and I had truly become a shell of my former self. I had no name. No family. No one to talk to. I had nothing.

I wish I could tell you that I knew things would get better...but I didn't feel that way at all. All I wanted was to find a loving family and instead was met with a door in my face, people shooing me off their property, dodging cars, starving, and just trying to make it to the next day. The more time that passed by, the more I started to accept that things would never change and that is when I really started to get sick. Just when I had all but given up, someone found me. I let myself hope that maybe I was finally getting off the streets and into a loving home...but only one of those things ended up happening. I ended up getting off the streets which was something, but I was brought to the animal shelter. I may have had food and shelter now, but I still felt so hopeless. I kept hearing the other dogs talk, and they said the only way to get out of the shelter was if you had an owner or someone who adopted you. I already knew I had no one looking for me and it was no surprise when I served my stray hold uneventfully.

I ended up on the urgent list due to the fact that I was not doing too well in the shelter setting. I was losing weight instead of gaining and seemed to be shutting down even more. I figured all hope had been lost, when suddenly a shelter volunteer showed up at more door and told me that I was getting out of there. I was so shocked. I had no idea who decided to take a chance on me, but I was not going to question it. Soon, I was outside of the shelter and being loaded up in the car! Turns out that a foster family with this rescue had stepped up for me, and I was joining their fluffy butt family!

I have a calmer personality and spend most of my days napping. I have become quite the couch potato but my favorite time to be on the couch is when my people are up there! I quickly figured out that I can get a lot of cuddles if I am on the couch when they are. While I am on the calmer side, I still like to have fun and play. I enjoy wrestling with the other dogs, romping around in the backyard, and chewing on bones. I have not been on any walks yet but do believe I would enjoy them. I don't know that I have the energy for going on long hikes though. I do well when meeting new people and will calmly greet them. I do well when meeting new dogs and am friendly with them. I have not had the chance to play in any water so am unsure if I am a water dog or not.

I am good with other dogs and cats. I am not currently being fostered around any kids. I do have a very loving and gentle personality so figure I would do well with kids as long as they respected my space/boundaries. I don't know that I would be a canidate for apartment living since I will be a big girl and definitely enjoy playing with the other dogs in the backyard. I have good house manners, and can be trusted to have free roam of the house. I have never been kenneled as it has not been necessary for me and hope that my new family won't kennel me either. I have not attempted to chew on anything that I shouldn't, but I should mention that things are already puppy proofed in my foster home. I am also potty trained.

That is all I have to share about myself. I really hope that we are a match. In case you missed it, the app to adopt me can be found at https://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/hx000BP7nbQvjHX49Uur80FV3

Please I am begging you though, only apply to adopt me if you can keep me forever. If you can't keep me through ALL of my life's changes, don't be the one that makes me have to be passed around a few months/years down the line. That just isn't fair to me.

I would NEVER give up on myself, so please don't give up on me. I want to be your forever...not your until dog.
