Kira's Story

Kira's 11 years old, a Carolina Dog/Lab mix with all the good manners: She's housetrained, gentle, never destructive, wonderful with kids, great with other dogs, good with cats, and she even has an indoor voice. Kira doesn't bark so much as politely "discuss" things with her people, like a librarian who briefly needs to comment on a squirrel.
Last week, two awesome volunteers took Kira on an outing to Bass Pro Shop, where she happily greeted adults, employees, and children of every size. She soaked up attention, showed off her impressive tricks, and demonstrated her famous indoor voice for admirers.
When people didn't want to interact, Kira simply walked past them like, "Understood. Have a good day."
The volunteers even offered to buy her a toy or treat. Kira politely declined, because apparently she is too mature for impulse purchases.
But then something happened.
During every lap around the store, Kira kept guiding the volunteers back to the exact same spot: a shiny speedboat.
She would stop. Look at the boat. Smile at it.
Again and again.
Unfortunately, due to several minor logistical concerns -- including her lack of lake access, inability to reach the pedals, and the fact that no insurance company on Earth would cover it -- Kira returned to the shelter without her vessel.
But here's the thing: that little moment said everything.
Kira still has plans.
She still gets excited, still wants adventures, still wants to go places and meet people and maybe someday operate a watercraft.
This dog is not "done." She has a LOT of living left to do.
Please don't let her spend this chapter of her life in a shelter for reasons that were never her fault.
Kira is available for adoption through Animal Aid Society, located at 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are daily from 9am-noon, including weekends and holidays.
Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!

PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.
