John Boy's Story
John Boy is a 1-year and 1-month-old Catahoula Leopard Dog mix currently being held at the Kern County Animal Services - Bakersfield Shelter. He has been at the shelter since June 4, 2026, and is ready for his new home.

John Boy participated in the shelter's Doggy Day Out event and had a great time out on the town. Here's what his chaperone had to say about him:

I spent a few hours with John Boy today, and he was such a good boy!
He's playful, goofy, affectionate, and loves to cuddle. John Boy doesn't bark, walks well on leash, and is friendly with other dogs. He can be a little anxious in new environments, but once he settles in, his fun personality really shines through.

He loves exploring and was happy to spend time checking everything out. He also takes treats very gently and was a joy to have by my side throughout the day. While he was a little nervous during car rides, he handled everything well and continued to gain confidence.

If you're looking for a sweet, medium-energy companion with a playful personality and lots of love to give, come meet John Boy!

*The sweetest
*Playful
*Medium energy
*Loves exploring
*Friendly with other dogs
*Friendly with kids
*Takes treats gently
*Walks well on leash

For more information on John Boy including videos, check out his social media posts:

From Kern County Animals Services:
IG: https://www.instagram.com/reels/Dalo8TqElfA/
FB: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1761698545042447
YT: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/P8tJ-lxnHNo

From CAPS:
IG: https://www.instagram.com/reels/Daow_J6JvWM/
FB: https://www.facebook.com/reel/2471964883322981

Photos and information courtesy of John Boy's Doggy Day Out chaperone and Kern County Animal Services.

Pet ID: A1250844

ABOUT
Companion Animal Protection Services (CAPS), a national nonprofit based in Thousand Oaks, CA., partners with Kern County Animal Services in Bakersfield to find homes for at-risk dogs. The shelter has more than 300 dogs and puppies in two metal warehouses with no outdoor runs. Dogs and puppies are at high risk for euthanasia because of lack of space and too many abandoned dogs in the community.

HOW TO ADOPT, RESCUE OR FOSTER
Please contact CAPS if you are interested in adopting, rescuing or fostering, and we will make sure the shelter contacts you. They do not answer phones or respond often to voice messages due to understaffing. The dogs are in Bakersfield, not Thousand Oaks.

HOW TO CONTACT CAPS
https://caps-web.org/contact
No phone calls, please. Please use our contact form or reach out to us through Petfinder.

FOSTER HOMES
Fosters must live in Kern County.

TRANSPORT
CAPS can arrange transportation if you are on the West Coast. Adopters are responsible for transport fees.
