Meet Jack and Jill - a BONDED PAIR
Jack and Jill are 8 year old brother and sister siblings who originally came to us by way of a local SPCA where they were surrendered because their owner had too many dogs in the house. They were not socialized at all and hid wherever possible when we first took them in so they have spent 5 months in a foster home learning how to trust.
These two have sure had their share of maladies while with us! Both had extremely high white blood cell counts of unknown origin, which are now finally back to normal. Both were also morbidly obese, Jack was over 20 pounds and Jill was over 18 pounds when they should be more like 10-12 pounds at most. Because they seem to have a very low metabolism and gain weight on standard dog food, they have been on a strict home cooked diet for the past 4 months and are now down to 12 pounds (Jack) and 12.5 pounds (Jill). Their new family will need to ensure that they are kept on a diet that will not cause them to gain weight. Especially because Jack had a very high grade luxating patella on one of his back legs which required knee surgery and does have a mild luxating patella in the other back leg so any extra weight will be detrimental to his knee. They have both been doing well on Hills Metabolic Support Food and Just Food For Dogs Metabolic support food so they don't necessarily need home cooked food any more now that they are at a more optimal weight.
Jack and Jill are still on the shy side when you first meet them. It will take them some time to warm up and trust people therefore we will be looking for a quiet home for them without children who can be patient and give them the time that they need to adjust and trust. Jack warms up much faster than Jill and will roll over for belly rubs quickly. Jill, on the other hand, is much more scared and reserved. They are so scared of the world outside of their foster home that they do not walk on leash or go outside of their back yard and probably never will so they will need a secure fenced in yard for potty breaks and a bit of exercise. Speaking of potty breaks, neither Jack or Jill are fully housebroken and will need a family that can get them on a regular potty schedule and work with them on house training. They do use pee pads in their foster home and Jack would much prefer to use pee pads and typically needs to be carried outside to do his business. Both dogs need to be kept outside for enough time to do their business since they tend to run inside too quickly and end up using pee pads.
Jill is extremely protective of Jack so we feel is it best for them to be the only dogs in the house. Jill gets a little cranky towards Jack like siblings do and they do have short minor spats with each other. We originally thought that maybe it would be best to separate them but neither do well without the other so we assume Jack is just so used to his sister telling him what to do, that he is lost without her.
Both love sitting with their foster family at night and enjoying belly rubs. They would love sleeping next to their family as well but haven’t been able to very much because of other dogs in the household. Because they can’t get full one on one time with their foster family right because of other dogs in the household, we can’t wait for them to be able to enjoy their family all of the time!
We know that we are asking a lot of a family for them, but we know they deserve it and we know that the perfect family is out there waiting for them!
