Meet Izzy

In light of the coronavirus outbreak and in keeping with current safety guidelines, our shelter is closed to visitors and our dogs are in foster care with volunteers. While we are unable to arrange visits with our dogs until social-distancing restrictions are lifted, we are happy to answer your questions about our dogs, our adoption process, and whether we might have a good fit for you. If you are looking to adopt NOW, please check with your local county shelter. If you’d like to be considered for one of our current dogs once our world gets back to normal, we'd love to hear from you.

UPDATE 4/26 We are currently accepting applicants for MizzIzz. Prospective families must have a fenced yard, another dog in the home, and prior training experience.

UPDATE 4/22 More info from Izzy's time in foster care:

Good habits: Izzy is very playful, but also likes to cuddle. She can easily entertain herself with just about anything--sticks, toys, paper ... She is a great walker and is interested in everything she sees. She is great with other dogs and goes to doggy daycare. She sits nicely and waits for her dinner or when we are getting ready to go for a walk.

Bad habits: She chews on anything she can get her teeth on. She can be a little nippy when she gets excited, but not in a mean way. She will nip at your heels and pant leg if you are walking, but tends to stop if you correct her. Can also show possessiveness and get snappy at times, but again is easily corrected with a squirt from a water bottle.

Funny fact: Izzy can't resist water. Wherever there is a puddle, she has to walk through it ... the dirtier, the better :O)

Dream family: An active. outdoorsy family would be good since Izzy likes to play and LOVES to be outside. Because of her bouts of possessiveness, don't think she's a good match to be around little kids.

UPDATE 3/27 Good things can come out of something even as horrible as the coronavirus. Just ask any of our lucky shelter dogs who are being temporarily fostered in the homes of our huge-hearted volunteers. Here's a little update on spunky monkey MizzIzz from her foster mum ...

"Izzy's favorite toy is any stick she can find. Her favorite activity...playing in water. She walked in a ditch along the side of the road and had a blast. She loves to be outside and always wants to play. Don't be deceived by her napping by the door. That is just the calm before the storm!"

UPDATE 3/21 ... Such a goofball when she plays with tennis balls! She is never remotely close to catching it in her mouth, but always makes such a valiant effort.

Welcome to America! Izzy takes the prize for our longest-distance rescue, taken in off the streets of Bahrain by a U.S. military family. Izzy must have recognized them as her ticket to a brighter future, because she ran over to their two pups and followed them into the car! They fostered her for a few months until they could send her across the sea to the safety of STAF, where she is eagerly awaiting her forever family.

At around 40 pounds, Izzy is vivacious and loving, always ready to make new friends. She interacts well with people and other dogs. Around 9 months old at the time of this posting (est. birthdate 4/19), she comes with the typical puppy challenges and will need a home with the time and patience to guide her in becoming a well-mannered girl. No idea on her breed ... in the Middle East, she is referred to as a standard desert dog or a "Bahraini Special". Here in the States, we call her an American Love Bucket. Please contact us for more information or to set up an appointment to meet her!

• We do not do same-day adoptions; we ask that you return for a follow-up visit before taking an animal home.
• You must be 21 years or older to adopt from STAF.
• We require a 4-foot-tall physical fence for homes with children under the age of 11. We also may require a physical fence for specific dogs on a case-by-case basis, depending on each dog’s behavior and exercise needs.
• Invisible fences: Due in part to increasing coyote activity/incidents in the area and the difficulty of predicting how a dog will respond to invisible fence training, we cannot adopt to homes with invisible fences.
• We do request vet and personal references.
• We can facilitate adoptions within a 75-mile radius of our Cincinnati-based shelter.

Please visit www.STAF.org for visiting hours, a downloadable application, and additional information.
