He's a true slow-burn kind of dog-the sort who may not rush into your arms on day one, but who becomes more special every time he decides to let you a little closer.<br/><br/>Hubby likes to take his time and quietly observe the world around him. He'll follow his person from room to room while maintaining what he considers the perfect "Hubby safety zone," just in case a strategic retreat becomes necessary. He spends plenty of time lounging in his bed or relaxing nearby, taking everything in and learning that he doesn't always have to be on high alert.<br/><br/>And then, when Hubby decides it's safe to let his personality out, it is absolutely adorable. He has the cutest full-body wiggles and a goofy little side that is becoming more visible as his confidence grows. He'll even hide around a corner and pop out to surprise you, because apparently once you're comfortable enough to play hide-and-seek, you know you're making progress!<br/><br/>Hubby is doing well with a consistent schedule for going outside and is also using potty pads. Because he is a little gentleman who lifts his leg, his pads need to be secured or hung up. He does best with limited, supervised freedom for now, as too much space when he's unsupervised can lead to an accident-or an unfortunate decision involving your pillow. His foster family is helping him build good habits through routine and structure.<br/><br/>One of Hubby's biggest challenges is that he is easily startled. New sounds, smells, wind, birds, or unexpected movement can send him into flight mode. He is frightened by the process of being reached for to put on his leash, but once he's safely leashed, he does an adorable excited wiggle and walks quite nicely. If something scares him while he's walking, though, he can pull hard. Because of this, Hubby will need a very safety-conscious family who understands that keeping him secure is especially important.<br/><br/>Hubby will need another dog in his adoptive home. He isn't especially interested in playing or cuddling with the dogs in his foster home and is generally pretty indifferent to them. If they become too invasive, he'll let them know with a little lip wrinkle and prefers having his own space. However, even though he doesn't rely on them for companionship, he does watch them closely and appears to take cues from seeing other dogs trust and interact comfortably with people. Because Hubby is still very cautious and slow to trust humans, having a confident resident dog gives him an important example to learn from as he continues building confidence.<br/><br/>Hubby is definitely not a "take me anywhere and everywhere" kind of dog, and he isn't going to be the right match for every home. He needs a patient person who understands that trust cannot be rushed. He would do best in a calm, predictable environment without young or very noisy children, where he can continue building confidence at his own pace. A cat-free home is also best.<br/><br/>Hubby may take his time, but that's part of what makes his progress so rewarding. Every wiggle, every playful surprise, every moment he chooses to climb into your lap is a little glimpse of the wonderful dog underneath the shyness.
