Gracie's Story
Looking for a very special forever home for a small, sweet girl who has been through more than any dog should.

Gracie is an 8 year old Yorkie-Poo who came from a backyard breeder situation where she was kept in a dark, unheated, unventilated shed with no real human contact. Because of that, she is extremely needy and bonded to people — she will need someone who is home most of the day (work-from-home, retired, or a household where someone is around). She is not ready for long hours alone.
Since coming to HFH Gracie has come out of her shell and showed us just how loving and cuddly she can be. She has been through a lot since arriving. She has been spayed, had mammary tumors removed (benign) and had a dental with many extractions.

Gracie has some quirks that she needs some help working through. She can be fearful of some stairs and would sometimes need to be carried up or down. She is also a velcro dog and suffers from separation anxiety so will need someone who is home more often than not. She does very well with dogs of all sizes. As sweet as she is she has not discovered playing with another dog but she is friendly with them. She would do well in a home with another dog, but would also be fine as the only dog if someone is home most of the time. She does like small spaces to hide in but does not like to be crated.

She is not housebroken yet and will need a patient person willing to work with her on potty training. Accidents are expected for a while as she learns what a normal home feels like.

Gracie enjoys long walks with her person and even car rides. If you are looking for a loyal lap dog Gracie is your girl! She does sleep in a bed with her human but is also O.K. if there is a bed for her on the floor next to yours. She does sleep through the night. Despite having to have all her teeth removed she is very food motivated and love her treats and cheese.

Despite everything, she is loving, eager to be close, and just wants to feel safe. She will thrive with someone who understands that her “neediness” is a trauma response and is willing to give her time, structure, and lots of quiet reassurance.

Ideal home:
Someone home the majority of the day
Patient with house training
Calm environment, preferably with experience with fearful or under-socialized dogs
No long periods of isolation

If you can offer her the steady, present home she has never had, her application can be found at www.homesfurhounds.org
