Meet Finn

Finn (AKA Finley) is an affectionate puppy who sometimes seems so much more mature than what you would expect for a 7-month-old Lab. Finn has many wonderful qualities:

• He is intelligent, eager to please, highly trainable, and very alert
• He is not overly destructive, although he occasionally will get hold of something he should not have and chew it or just play “keep away” with it; you need to keep enticing things out of his reach
• He is super affectionate, loves to cuddle, and enjoys seeking attention from his people
• He can be your shadow but is not Velcro; oftentimes he is perfectly content just hanging out in another room
• He knew no commands when he arrived, but now knows his name, sit, down, come (or a whistle), sit/wait for food (although his wait is only a few seconds), din-din, and is learning more every day
• It took him no time at all to learn where the treat jars are kept; he now does an adorable “sit and stare” by the treat jars after every trip outside. Commands that are still a work in progress are: “off,” “easy,” “back,” “enough,” and “drop it”
• His tail never stops wagging and his ears curl back when he is really happy
• He loves playing with other dogs albeit it roughly at times; if placed with another dog, the dog needs to be confident enough to correct his inappropriate behaviors
• He is a pleasure to watch running through the yard with his multitude of different types of balls (he LOVES balls)
• We recently learned that he adores swimming and can’t get enough of it and, of course, he loves every mud puddle he encounters!

Finn sometimes gets too excited and can become hyperactive when seeking attention, which is easily dealt with by removing yourself until he calms down. He is grabby with his treats (especially if other dogs are around) and sometimes other things you might be holding in your hands. He still jumps up on people, but has become much better at responding to the “off” command. These behaviors are typical of puppies; he will need continued training and redirection to improve these puppy behaviors. He needs a LOT of exercise – 2 to 3 hours of exercise/walking every day, but that is to be expected since he is a puppy! Finn has a stubborn streak when you want him to do something he does not wish to do; he can be part mule when he wants to be!

Finn has a genetic condition known as distichiasis (eyelashes that arise from an abnormal location on the eyelid or grow in an abnormal direction). Surgery was successfully performed on 8/16/18 to remove the eyelashes and destroy the hair follicles. However, he will need to be monitored by his family and at his annual Vet exams throughout his life as there is a possibility the condition can reoccur.

Finn’s ideal family would be one that has at least a moderate amount of dog experience, especially in working with puppy behaviors and training. His family will need to be very active and committed to providing him with the exercise and training he needs. Another dog in the home would be a positive as he loves to play with other dogs, but Finn would also likely do well as the only dog since he might enjoy being the center of attention! Although he could be placed in a home with any age children, if there are younger children in the home, his family would have to be very dog savvy due to his jumping (possible knock down factor for young children) and his roughness when taking treats and other food items from your hands. He has recently displayed a prey drive chasing wildlife in my yard, but he has never been exposed to cats, which are an unknown.
