Meet Duke - update Jan 6
Update Jan 6: It's NEVER too cold to stop for a treat! Duke and Casey making it clear that a snack should be served. Duke was been with us for some time, partly due to his strength on leash and he is reactive to seeing other dogs when out. Duke is a smart dog and with some commitment to training he could learn to be a dog that ignores other dogs while on outings. This is the goal. He is food motivated and that will work well towards his continued training on loose leash walking. He gets paid intermittently for focusing on me and not the cars. Certain loud truck and cars can also make Duke lunge so he gets a bit more "pay" for staying focused as you hear the cars going by. Duke is a volunteer favourite as he loves going in his kennel, happy to greet and just a generally nice dog with a few rough edges he needs some help with. He is so kind and just wants to be loved.
DUKE is a 3+ year old mixed breed who came to us when his owner could no longer keep him (Apr 2017). Duke is a very nice fellow, friendly with all the volunteers he has met, good in his kennel and likes car drives. Duke's heritage likely has some guarding breeds as he can be watchful and uncertain in some situations (e.g. a young man in a car smoking with loud music on put Duke on high alert with a low growl). Duke has not had a good reaction to the other male dogs at the shelter. He has been fine with most of the female dogs he has met. Duke has become more interested in cats as time progresses, so is not recommended for them. Duke's ideal home would be with an adult family (or single) or family with children 10+. He is strong so would need someone physically able to handle him on leash while he is being trained. Duke is biddable and would learn easily. Duke is not all that comfortable with restraint in situations when he is not the one engaging it and is sensitive to sound.
