He did not have a microchip and did not get claimed. He went to the local vet office which was that town's animal control and went up for adoption. Unfortunately for Duke, the vet office permanently closed December 19th, and any dogs or cats left were going to be euthanized. Waverly Pet Rescue was asked to help and was able to take in one dog, and we picked Duke. He came to us December 19th and he is now living in a foster home. Duke is up to date on shots, neutered, and heartworm negative.

Duke is about 2 years old as of January 2026 and weighs about 50 pounds. We are guessing but he appears to be a Shepherd/German Shepherd mix. We boarded Duke for over a month until he found a foster home, and he was a good boy at the vet office with no issues. Duke is friendly and affectionate. He does well with other dogs, just needs to be introduced properly. He chases cats so needs a home with no cats. He is energetic and loves to play. His favorite toy is a tennis ball. He would do well with older children because he might accidentally knock over a little one because he has lots of energy. And older children that have been around dogs and knows to give a new dog space and not to crawl on them when the dog is resting/napping. He was originally found tied to a tree so is not a big fan of leashes. We have a harness for him and leash for him, and he is doing better at not being afraid of them. He breaks out of wire kennels so if you crate him, he will need a very sturdy one. His foster home has him in their finished basement at night with an opened crate so he can go in if he wants to. He wandered for a bit and whimpered while investigating, but eventually he laid down and was quiet all night first night. They have a ring camera down there so they could watch him and make sure he was ok. Now he has settled in and is doing great. The foster put a belly band on him in case he tried to mark which is common with a new dog in a new home, and so he did try to mark a couple of times, but the foster caught him and told him no and he stopped. He does well in the car but did want to explore everything so doesn't sit still. That should get better once he knows he is safe and loved. He is a wonderful dog who just wants to be doing what you’re doing, and he loves to be outside. He would do great with other dogs, but I think would also do fine being the only dog if the family was active. No accidents in the house either. The foster does have a doggy door out to the fenced in yard and that has worked great. Before he figured the doggy door out, he was going to the door on his own to be let out so it appears he is housetrained and will just need a refresher and time in a new home. He also has a gentle mouth taking treats and that is awesome to see him do.

He is doing so great! I do think he has a little anxiety and separation issues, which is completely understandable. Other than that, so far, he has been a wonderful guest.

Duke loves loves loves to run around their 6 ft privacy fence and we are going to require his new home to have that also and it will also keep him safe. . He did scope out the fence looking for a way out so it needs to be secure, and he could probably jump over anything shorter than the 6 feet.

We do not know the trauma Duke experienced in his life in Storm Lake or who it was that mistreated him. Duke has so many good qualities and will thrive if the right home can be found. He needs some training to help him heal from that trauma and his foster home is working on this with him. He can learn that the leash won't hurt him, that he will never be hurt or abandoned again.

1/23/26 UPDATE: Learned some personality traits today. First, he is a counter surfer. Found our little breadbasket and the rest is history. lol That was partially our fault because we haven’t had a big dog in the house for quite some time. (All our dogs are small) He’s tried to chew through his leash. All of these issues may stop once he feels safe and some TLC

Duke is a wonderful dog and looking for the best home! He has been through a lot and deserves a kind and loving forever home!

$175.00 adoption fee for Duke.

WE ARE A NO-KILL 501-C-3 NON-PROFIT RESCUE. All donations are tax deductible.
