Duke came from Cedar Bend Humane Society in Waterloo, Iowa. Waverly Pet Rescue took him in because of COVID-19 and the shelter now being closed. Duke will love being in a foster home, so that is why he was transferred to us. So Duke is now a Waverly Pet Rescue dog. He is living in a foster home. He is up to date on shots, tested heartworm negative, and neutered.

Duke is about 4 years old and weighs about 45 pounds. We were told he is a hound mix, possibly coonhound. Some of his paperwork also mentions German Shorthair pointer. Duke is doing great! He's a good boy and a sweetheart. And very handsome! He seems to be housebroken as we haven't had any accidents in the house. He does fine at night. He doesn't really like to go in the crate, but once he is in there he is fine all night. The first couple of nights he whined a little bit, but not anymore. He goes in the kennel pretty good during the day as well. The first day he was unsure of our hardwood floors and would stand on the couch and whine and bark because he wanted to get down on the floor, but was afraid. He was pretty funny. By the third day he was over that fear and explored the entire house. He gets along great with our dog. They will play together outside. Even though our dog is quite a bit bigger than him, he is not afraid. He also loves zooming around the yard and flying off the deck, no need for steps. He does like to be petted and will lay on the couch with his head on my lap. He hasn't had any food aggression issues. He doesn't have very good manners tho when it comes to eating in front of him, like if you are on the couch. He is fine when you eat at the table, but if you have food away from the table, he is trying to get it. He also likes to counter surf a little bit and his nose is in full force, but he does know the meaning of "no". He has quickly settled into our home and he's pretty tough not to love.

Duke needs a home with no cats, he wants to chase them. He should do ok with older kind children, he has not been around small little children yet. With his nose, he would do best with a fenced in yard.

4/22/20 UPDATE: When we took Duke in it was noted on his medical information that his teeth needed cleaning. So he went to a vet today for a dental! He had his teeth cleaned and 2 had to be pulled.

5/5/20 UPDATE: I would say Duke is pretty calm. He just lays around mostly when inside, and vary rarely barks at anything. He's not interested much in playing with toys. Once in awhile he will chew on a bone. He isn't perfect on a leash, but not bad either. He is getting better. My husband has been taking him for a walk daily and Duke loves it. He is house broken and seems to have a pretty good bladder as he can wait along time. We haven't had any accidents since we have had him, never even at first. I don't have any experience with him around kids, but I have not seen any aggression in him ever. He loves to be pet and snuggled with. My guess would be that he would be fine with kids, but obviously I can't say for sure.

Will someone please adopt Duke and give him a forever home? $195.00 adoption fee.

All animals see a vet for shots and normal exams. If they appear healthy and there are no obvious health concerns, then extensive testing is not done. This is normal procedure for pet rescues and shelters.
Waverly Pet Rescue puts a lot of money into medical care for each dog and cat we take in. $300 is the average cost for basic care. This does not include if the animal had an injury, required extra flea / ear mite treatments, or needed extra days at the vet office.
