Meet Dixie

Dixie is a pretty chill 5 year-old girl who is very happy hanging out with her person. She loves car rides and going on adventures. She prefers a quite home, without a lot of distractions. She is dog-selective, so we recommended that she meet any resident dog prior to adoption to make sure they will be good siblings. She was previously fostered with other dogs and got along well with the males but liked to get bossy with the females. She has a touch of hip displasia, but it is not surgical and doesn't slow her down. Below are some notes from her current foster home:

Dixie has had another good week. She has a mild ear infection in both ears. Thankfully they are improving with the ear drops the vet gave her. Administering the ear drops has been a bit of a challenge, but I am getting better each time I do it. She will be on the ear drops for another 6 days. I have also been giving her 1 Benadryl every 12 hours to help with her seasonal allergies. It seems to be helping her with the urge to scratch. I have been taking her for car rides in place of walks the last couple days due to inclement weather. I have been playing ball with her inside the house to manage her energy level. She also likes sniffing for treats.

Dixie has had another good week. I have been working on the place command with her. She has been picking up on it pretty quick. She still doesn't quite understand the concept of going to her place from across the house yet, but she continues to get a little better at it every time we practice.

Here's the latest on Dixie. She has been continuing to do very well in a home setting! My parents came over this evening for a game night. I kept her in the kennel for the first couple minutes, then let her come into the main area. She barked a few times, but then became her usual loving self. I am so proud of this sweet girl and the amazing progress she's made!

Dixie has been continuing to do well. She sleeps through the night in her crate now. I continue to allow her to choose where she wants to sleep. She usually sleeps in front of the door for about half an hour, then moves to her crate where she spends the rest of the night. My parents came over for lunch last Friday, and she was really sweet with them, allowing them to pet her and give her treats. I think she has formed a really strong bond with me, because she is basically a second shadow for me now. She wants to follow me everywhere, and seems to really trust me with everything in her.

This has been another great week with Dixie. She has been doing very well in her crate while my roommate and I are at work. Thankfully, with the way my work schedule overlaps with my roommate's, she is usually not in the crate nonstop for more than a few hours. She is always enthusiastic to see me when I get home. I have been taking her for short walks throughout the neighborhood. She has enjoyed getting out of the house and getting some fresh air. I've noticed that she doesn't pee or poop on walks though, and prefers to wait until we get back to our yard. I don't know if it's because she doesn't like walking in the snow, or if she just feels more comfortable doing her business in a familiar location. At night, I have begun to allow her to sleep outside the crate. She usually starts sleeping in front of my bedroom door, then moves to her crate with the door open. I am super happy that she sees the crate as her own safe space where she can go whenever she needs a break.

So far Dixie's foster time has been going amazing. She has been extremely well behaved at all times . When we first arrived at home, she sniffed around the house then went and chilled in her kennel for a while. I fed her dinner in the kennel, then let her come out by my roommate and I on a leash while we watched tv. I went to bed around 8 pm, and Dixie went in her kennel for the night at that time too. I woke up around 6:30 am, and Dixie greeted me with kisses and asked for belly rubs. I fed her breakfast around 7:30 this morning then took her out to walk a few laps around the yard and house. I have been letting her out quite often to relieve herself (probably more often than really needed, but I want to get an idea of her bathroom needs). She has really enjoyed chasing her rubber ball around the living room. She has tried to get into the trash can a couple times, but a simple command of "out" or "leave it ", is enough to get her to stop. She has been doing well with her sits and downs. I am super proud of Dixie so far!

Dixie is a sweet 5-year-old girl with an amazing personality!

Dixie loves to go for walks, play with her rubber ball, and go on car rides. She is a gal that lives to go on adventures. She is also very chill, and will be just fine hanging out at home. Dixie is housebroken and extremely well behaved. She knows how to sit, stay, shake, and we are working on the place command. She does great in her kennel, and actually prefers to sleep in it at night. She is very good on a leash, and hardly ever pulls. Dixie does struggle with dog reactivity on walks, and she would do best in a home as the only dog. Dixie also prefers a home without cats or small children. Dixie does have hip dysplasia, but she doesn't let it slow her down. She still enjoys going on long walks, and she will let you know when she's ready to go home. Dixie takes a little bit of time to warm up to new people, but once she does she will love you forever. Dixie would love to be a part of your family!
