Derek's Story

Hi, I’m Derek! I’m a 3-year-old, 15-pound Jack Russell/Rat Terrier mix with a gentle heart and a newfound appreciation for the little things in life. I was rescued from a hoarding situation down South, where I never really had the chance to experience what being a cherished family member was all about. Thankfully, those days are behind me and I’m now being fostered in Albion, Michigan, where I’m learning just how wonderful life can be. And let me tell you, I’ve already discovered a couple of things I absolutely LOVE. Snuggling up next to my people and burrowing under the covers for a good night’s sleep! After everything I’ve been through, there’s something pretty special about having a warm, cozy place to curl up and someone to share it with.

I’m a sweet, gentle little guy who gets along well with people and other dogs. I can still be shy when meeting someone new, but once I start feeling comfortable, you’ll see what a loving little companion I can be. I’m happiest when I feel safe and secure, and having another dog around really helps with that. I look to my canine friends for reassurance and confidence, so having a friendly dog to show me the ropes will make a world of difference. I WILL REQUIRE A FENCED YARD TO HELP KEEP ME SAFE AND A CANINE SIBLING TO HELP ME FEEL CONFIDENT AND HAPPY. I’m looking for a patient, understanding family who won’t expect me to be brave overnight but will give me the time and encouragement I need to keep blossoming.

I may not be the first dog to run up and greet you, but please don’t let my initial shyness fool you. Underneath it all is a sweet little boy who just wants to love someone and be loved right back. I’ve spent the first three years of my life missing out on so many things other dogs take for granted, and I’m finally getting my chance to make up for lost time. I’ll come fully vetted, neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations and preventatives. I don’t need a fancy house or a perfect family. Just a safe place to land, a little patience, a furry friend and someone who won’t mind sharing their blankets and their heart with me.

If interested, please DO NOT submit an inquiry through Petfinder. Fill out the application at the link below.

https://adopt.animalsfirst.com/animal/63adcb00cb896f59b74103d2/6a8c55bb174d09980b045180

———

Angie's Dog House's Adoption Policy
Our Adoption Process Our goal is to make the adoption process as smooth as possible while making sure each animal is matched with the right home 1. Submit an Application Complete our adoption application using the link at the bottom of each animal’s bio. Our team will review your application and if approved, someone from the rescue will reach out. PLEASE DO NOT FILL OUT AN INQUIRY ON PETFINDER 2. Home Video Once approved, we will ask you to submit a video walkthrough of your home and yard in lieu of an in-person home visit 3. Animals Already in Foster If the animal is currently in a foster home, the foster parent will contact you to answer questions, tell you more about the animal and arrange a meet and greet. Please bring a leash to the meet and greet. If everything goes well and you feel it is the right match, you may complete the adoption and take your new family member home that day 4. Direct Adoptions From Transport Some of our animals travel to Michigan specifically for direct adoption rather than going into a foster home. Because these animals are coming on transport specifically to meet their approved adopter, a direct adoption must be a firm commitment. Please ask any questions and make sure you are comfortable moving forward before committing to a transport animal 5. Finalizing the Adoption To complete the adoption, you will sign our adoption contract and pay the adoption fee. Once complete, your new family member is officially yours and can head home with you
