Hello, My name is Darla. <br/><br/>I am a 20 lb, 4-year old mini-Bernadoodle. My foster mom says I like a gently browned marshmallow, soft and sweet on the inside, just waiting to bust out of the slightly charred exterior I sometimes hide behind. <br/><br/>I'm going to shoot you straight here...the last place I lived wasn't much fun. My job was to be a mama dog, that was it. Nobody spent any significant time with me and I arrived to the rescue struggling to trust humans. <br/><br/>It has been a hard thing...to learn what it is like to be a dog in a loving home. When I arrived, I wouldn't approach people at all. Now I willingly take treats and enjoy neck scratches. I am growing more confident every day. I study my foster dog siblings and it seems like it should be so easy. Slowly, I am getting more comfortable and confident, and I would benefit from another calm and confident canine sibling in my future home to help continue to show me the ropes. <br/><br/>While I haven't met any cats here, I like the bunny and chickens and am fine to simply co-exist with them. I also appreciate a good bed snuggle, I eat well, and I absolutely love going on walks. They are my favorite! I feel like I can relax and be myself for once. My tail goes up, I even prance a little! <br/><br/>So here is my open letter to anyone reading this: <br/><br/>I am a good dog. I am kind, loving, and gentle. I am fine being held and secretly love a neck scratch. I have come a long way in my foster home, but I still have a ways to go to become the best version of me. I will need a person or family who "gets" me, who is willing to be steady, consistent, work with me and train me to gain my trust.I need someone who is confident, patient, and understanding because I will likely shy away from my people, at least in the beginning. A structured routine and calm home are essential. I have met children and liked them, but too much energy would not be a good fit. Am I worth all this effort? Absa-freaking-olutely. <br/><br/>My foster mom always tells me that the dog makes the final decision about who they go home with, and since I don't make decisions lightly, anyone applying to be my family will need to commit to multiple meets with me before taking me home for good. I know this will help my transition into a new home go smoother for me and for my new family!<br/><br/>To summarize, this is me in a nutshell:<br/>~Socialization: working on socializing, zero aggression, but fearful and a flight risk if let loose outside of the home/secured yard.<br/>~Leash-trained: Yes<br/>~Crate trained: Yes, very good in crate.<br/>~House-trained: Yes, though regression is common in new environments.<br/>~Fenced Yard: Ideal, but not required pending living conditions and exercise schedule. <br/>~Personality: Sweet, sensitive, intelligent<br/>~Health history: UTD on vaccinations, spayed, microchipped, & on monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives.
