ChickPea's Story
Meet ChickPea !!
Yes its a French Bulldog but if you skip reading the entire post and message us saying you want her we will know youre not a serious adopter. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST. **She is a diva to say the least and has full on bulldog personality**
This beautiful girl was left at the shelter by her owner. She had horribly overgrown nails and clearly had not been given much training or structure in her life.
ChickPea is a female, approx 3 year old, French Bulldog. She weighs 20 pounds and is full grown.
She has now been spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccines. She is Heartworm negative.
Chickpea does really well with people. She is friendly and social and has been happy to meet everyone so far. She was well behaved at her spay appointment.
She is so-so with other dogs. She is not going to do well in a household with multiple other dogs that like to play. As soon as she sees or hears two other dogs roughhousing she rushes in like a referee and gets a bit nasty with them trying to separate them. She may do okay with one other dog. A calmer dog that isnt to hyper or overbearing toward her. She will definitely want to be the boss in the home. She is not fostered with cats but if her prey drive toward the yard frogs is any indication she likely wont do well with them.
ChickPea is not fostered with kids so we aren't sure how she would do. She should go to a home with kids over 12 years old. She is very rough when taking treats and will snatch food items from your hands and nip fingers accidentally. She also jumps on you a lot. Those things will not pair well with small kids. She is working on these things but training takes time and we don't want her labeled with a false bite history on a child due her snatching a food item from them.
It does not appear anyone spent time training her when she was younger. She is just now learning about rules, structure, and house manners. She is a work in progress with them. Her new owner will have to understand that she needs time and consistency.
She does well on car rides and does well on the leash. She is crate trained and is fine sleeping overnight in the crate or through a work day while you are gone. She does however still potty in the crate sometimes. She is not fully potty trained yet and still has accidents. She came to us with an upset stomach and then was spayed after that. Now that she is through all of that we are seeing a lot of improvement in her potty behavior. There is still a lot of work to be done with it still.
ChickPea has not shown any issues sharing food, treats or toys with people aside from snatching treats from hands. She does however growl when another dog comes around her if she is eating so it is best to feed her separately. She seems over obsessed with food so we think she may not have always had enough food. She may settle down about it some when she realizes food is available regularly now.
Her energy level so far is low to medium. She is not super hyper at all but has spunky moments. She enjoys chewing on toys and bones and hanging out around the house with you.
SO YOU THINK YOU WANT A BULLDOG.....
(things to consider)
French Bulldogs are expensive dogs to own. Its just how it is. They generally have lots of health problems and needs throughout their lives which will cost you in vet bills. Sadly these dogs have been overbred for money and the breeders do not care if they are creating dogs with lifelong health issues. If you cant honestly say youre willing to provide a decent amount of money on vet care then consider picking one of our other lower maintenance dogs.
If vet money isnt an issue for you, have you met a bulldog before? Can you handle the personality and attitude that comes with a pint size gremlin? ChickPea is all bulldog. Shes head strong and has no problem charging into a situation she thinks needs to be corrected. She is going to be the dominant animal in the household.
Breathing, yup that gets its own paragraph. These dogs struggle to breathe due to the shape of their faces. They can not be left outside alone. They can overheat in minutes from temperature or just playing too much. Bulldogs have to be limited in their activity by their owners or they can and will die.
Bulldogs are just not for the faint of heart or for new dog owners. They really are sweet dogs but they have very different attitudes than other dogs and health issues. PLEASE be honest with yourself about your abilities before trying to adopt her. She deserves the best and most capable family.
If youre experienced with bulldogs and financially prepared then this awesome girl might be for you!!
Located in Hampton VA.
(She will need to be adopted within a 2 hour drive radius)
!!Please message VillageDogResource@gmail.com Facebook Page directly with questions or to get an application.
