Champ's Story

WE ARE NOT A SHELTER. WE ARE A NO-KILL 501-C-3 NON-PROFIT RESCUE: To see an animal, you must fill out an application first and then once approved, we can set up for you to meet the animal you are interested in.

Here is the Dog Application that you can copy and paste into a browser: https://fs17.formsite.com/waverlypetrescue/form028182466/index.html

Champ's owner in Cedar Falls, Iowa, sadly recently had to go to a memory care facility, and dogs are not allowed there so Champ could not go with him. No one in the family can keep Champ, but they are willing to foster him until he gets adopted. Champ is up to date on shots, neutered, heartworm negative, and had senior bloodwork done recently and all is well there.

From Champ's foster family who is fostering their dad's dog until he gets adopted: "Champ is a 7-1/2-year-old Shih Tzu and weighs about 18 pounds as of May 2026. Champ was adopted by our father in 2023. We believe he was not treated well by his first family. Our father has had to go to Memory care and he can no longer have his dog. Our father has loved on Champ from day one.. It took some time as Champ was wary of people and learning how to trust people. He has come a long way with all the love he has been given. He does not like anyone coming at him in a fast manner or grabbing his head/face. He must have a home with no young children. Older kind children who have lots of dog experience and know how to approach a dog slowly would be ok. As long as he is approached in a calm manner, he does great. He likes other dogs, who are nonaggressive. He eats well around other dogs. He will play with other dogs. He has slept on my dad's bed but will sleep in his bed when directed. He loves to go on walks. If you are looking for a laid-back cute guy, Champ's the one. He would love a new home if someone works from home or is retired. He does best with lots of attention so needs a home where an adult is home often. He is let outside 3 to 6 times a day with no accident so is housetrained.

Champ is not really a lapdog, but he loves to be petted. He will lay next to you to be petted. We do not have a fenced yard and he sticks around, has not left the yard. To be safe, he should not be unsupervised outside. Champ plays with other dogs, otherwise the couch potato life is what he likes. He does gets treats and I taught him to dance for them. He stands on his hind legs and will turn around once. We give him Blue Buffalo nudges. We break them into little pieces for him because he rarely will eat from your hand.

We take him every few months for grooming at Companion Vet in Cedar Falls. Samantha is his groomer. No issues with grooming. He has been so good for us. He just wants to be petted and loved.

When my dad came to our home to meet him when we first got Champ back in 2023, we told my dad that he was temperamental and might bite, so not to get close to his face. But dad did get close to his face and was petting him, so Champ growled and then lashed out and bit dad. If he's sleeping and he does not want to get up he will growl and will lash out if you try to move him so don't do it. When we first got him, he was on the bed, my husband wanted him to get down off the bed he did growl, but we didn't know at the time that he would bite...so my husband tried lifting him off the bed and he grazed my husband's jaw. Champ does not like to be picked up at all unless he is going for a car ride or put on a bed. I do have dog steps for him to get onto a bed; he learned how to use them. They can go with the new owner. I can pick him up and put in a car or on a bed, but he trusts me now. He has never bitten me. but I am always careful and if he growls, I stop what I am trying to do. The bites were 3 years ago, and he has not bit anyone else. We just make sure to follow Champ's rules and all will be ok. Luckily Champ does give warning growls so follow the cues, and Champ will be the prefect little dog."

5/22/26 UPDATE: Champ moved to a WPR foster home because we finally had an opening. He is confused and that is to be expected. But all in all is doing well and his foster mom and dad adore him already. They are following all of Champ's cues and rules and all is going very well.

$.100 adoption fee for Champ.

WE ARE A NO-KILL 501-C-3 NON-PROFIT RESCUE. If they appear healthy and there are no obvious health concerns, then extensive testing is not done. This is normal procedure for pet rescues and shelters.
Waverly Pet Rescue puts a lot of money into medical care for each dog and cat we take in. $450 is the average cost for basic care. This does not include if the animal had an injury, required extra flea / ear mite treatments, or needed extra days at the vet office.
