Meet Benson! Benson is 4 years old, a 70lb hunk of snuggles and love, looking for a second chance at a forever home. He is sweet, loving and smart. He is gentle around food, toys and play time. Benson is a human-welcome-wagon. There are no human strangers in his gorgeous eyes. They are all friends to him, and once he has a chance to bond, you will have a very loyal, life long best friend. Benson is crate trained, place trained, and knows his basic commands. He is house trained, and very respectful in his foster home. He is a well mannered guy. He’s a snuggler, a kisser, and a couch potato. Hands-down, if Benson had it his way, he would prefer to be home lounging and snuggling on the couch with his person or playing at home, rather than being out and about. He is a bit of a home-body who loves butt-scratches, naps, and acting goofy with his person.
Even with all that wonderfulness, there are a few important considerations: Benson would be best as an only dog. There is some potential that he could do okay with a calm female dog of his size, but it’s still a little early to tell.
Here is a note from his trainer/foster:
Benson has learned to co-exist in a muzzle around lots of other dogs in his foster/training program. When he first arrived, he was not a fan of other dogs and would react out of insecurity. He likely had not been properly socialized as a younger dog, or it’s possible that he had a bad experience that made him feel unsafe. We have made it a focus to give Benson some positive experiences with other dogs in a safe manner to relieve some of that tension, and he is doing very well. Now he can calmly pass by other dogs on walks, looking at his person rather than focusing on the other dog. Good job Benson! It is such a huge achievement, you worked hard and we are so proud of you!!
Benson would not do well in a home with cats or small animals, but has learned to avoid them on walks rather than trying to chase. He is a strong dog who needs an equally strong and experienced owner that is capable of being a good leader. At the same time, he is actually quite a sensitive guy deep down who truly cares about pleasing his person. He loves nothing more than hearing that he’s a good boy, and gives the biggest smile back in return.Benson's trainer has graciously offered to help any potential adopter with transitioning Benson into his new home and provide continued support. Benson has had a tremendously difficult life but he is ready to find love and support in a family who loves him. Benson was rescued from a shelter in Los Angeles, CA and is being fostered in Eugene, OR. Will you be his hero?
