Meet Bailey

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION. Bailey is a special guy but unfortunately he isn’t the right match for most homes. Bailey is about 5 years old and he is a Yorkie mix – he is on the bigger side around 20-25 pounds or so. He’s a healthy guy and he loves to play ball and be near his people but he does not need to be in your lap although he does sometimes have to keep pawing at you and getting attention - sometimes he likes to hold hands! He sometimes does like to cuddle a bit too. He’s a great tv watching buddy. And if you like to eat while you’re watching TV, he doesn’t bug you at all – most of the time he just goes and lays down although he is willing to accept donations if you have pizza crusts or something else yummy to offer.
Unfortunately Bailey has some quirks that make him need to be pretty selective in who his forever family will be. Bailey does not like kids — at all. He needs a home with no kids in it, no kiddo visitors, no kid neighbors who would want to come visit this cute boy. No kids.
Bailey does not like to meet other dogs when he’s on a leash so walks are not much fun. He is ok with the dogs in his foster home - little seems better but he’s been around bigger dogs too. He might snap if another dog steps on him or gets in his space but he usually can figure it out. He even shares a bed sometimes with the dogs in his foster home. Cats are ok too although he’s very intrigued by them at times and occasionally pursues them.
Bailey needs to learn the rules of the house - he is very receptive to correction and feels awful when he screws up. But he has to be taught. He needs someone willing to be patient with him and teach him.
Bailey really needs a privacy fenced backyard (or a regular fence but no neighbors in close proximity) so he’s not distracted by neighbors (big/little humans or dogs) who will get him all riled up and he could nip. He’s not a condo/apartment dog- too many noises and unexpected encounters with new people and animals. He had an incident where some noise or movement triggered him and he nipped the leg of a person who was doing nothing other than having a conversation with his foster mom - they couldn't figure out what might have triggered him and Bailey has worked with a trainer who also couldn't identify a trigger or replicate that kind of reaction - he went to Home Depot and Lowes and parks and did great with the trainer. But based on what we have seen, and the reason he was surrendered to the shelter and then came to us in the first place, we know that Bailey doesn't do well in many normal social situations and needs a special home. He takes Prozac for his anxiety but he still can be a little unpredictable as far as his reaction in certain social situations so good control of him is necessary so he can be a good boy. He doesn't handle visitors well and needs to be restrained or put in another room and slow introductions done. He seems to do better if he comes in and the new person is already there than if he sees them at the door and then they want to come in. Petsmart adoption events is really not where Bailey shines because the dogs are on leashes and he’s in a crate - at adoption events with dogs parading past and people staring at him, it’s not his scene. He gets overly stressed and acts out. So we don’t put him in that situation. We do private meetings for Bailey.
That probably makes it sound like Bailey is just awful and he’s not at all! Bailey is complicated. We know that. But he's wonderful too. The Bailey we see in his foster home isn't the same Bailey we see when he's out in the world having to be social and interpret all that is going on around him.
Knowing how awesome Bailey can be, we think his awesome person is out there! We just know that everyone gets sucked in by his cute looks, and we want to make it very clear that unfortunately Bailey is not going to be a match for most people. But for the right person or adult-only family, Bailey will be a wonderful companion and friend! He’s well behaved in the house, he gets along with the other dogs and cats in his foster home, he sits politely to wait for treats, and he loves to dance! He's patient while you trim his hair and pick out the crusties in his eyes. He's loving - he likes to be near you, on the couch, on the bed, when you go to the bathroom.... ?
He's not a big kisser but occasionally he will sneak one in. He does like to lean on you and be touching you. He's funny, smart, well-behaved, rarely has a potty accident. He prefers to eat while his person is present in the room. He gets super excited and lets out a little yip when the leash comes out - dancing and hopping in circles! And he loves car rides. He does pull on the leash – he’s in a big hurry to get wherever he’s going! The groomer said he did wonderfully for her and he also does fine at the vet. We just take things slow and make sure that people that are meeting him understand that he needs that too. Again- no kids though.
Bailey is looking for his perfect home – we know it’s a tall order but we also know it’s out there! We have learned a lot about Bailey in the last few months which helped us be able to narrow down the list of what works for him so that we can hopefully make a successful match. Because we know Bailey is complicated, we are looking for an experienced dog owner and we are limiting his adoption area to the Cincinnati area only so that we can do slow introductions and make sure we are available to assist as needed.
If you think you might be the right match for Bailey and live in the Cincinnati area, please go to our website to submit an adoption application www.recycleddoggies.org To meet Bailey, you will need to submit an adoption application ahead of time and get preapproved - if your application seems like a potential match, we'd love to set up a private meeting.
If you think you might be the right match for Bailey, please go to our website to submit an adoption application www.recycleddoggies.org THAT IS THE FIRST STEP IN OUR PROCESS. Our adoption fee is $195. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, up to date on age-appropriate vaccines, dewormed, heartworm tested, and microchipped.
