NOTES FROM FOSTER FAMILY:

Baby is a 5 y.o poodle/chihuahua mix who came to Canine Castaways from North Florida where she was from a backyard breeder. She was positive for heartworm when she arrived and has been successfully treated for it.

It seems that before coming to us she had little contact with humans and is still very skittish around them. She does get along well with other small dogs.
She has been our foster for over three months now and has made some progress with her socialization skills. She seems more attracted to her foster mom and other females, but shies away from her foster dad and other males. When she gets frightened she hides under chairs, sofas, tables etc. If left alone she does come out and mixes with the other dogs or goes to her foster mom.

She is pad trained at this point and will go outside, after being caught, if on a leash, which she is still trying to get use to. She is used to being crated, as she has apparently spent most of her previous life in one, but prefers to be free and will sleep in a dog-bed, on her foster mom's lap or in bed with the other dogs.

Baby is a very loving dog who has lots of love to give but needs a lot of patience and love to be given to her. She wants to please but she appears not to be use to positive praise, re-enforcement and love from humans. She needs a lot of human attention and love and wouldn't do well if left alone for more then 2-3 hours at a time.

Baby is an adorable little dog who has had a very bad past and still needs to work on trust issues and human socialization and walking on a leash. If you are interested in offering Baby a forever home and have any questions or concerns about her, please contact us at Canine Castaways, and we would be happy to call you and answer any questions you have about Baby. UPDATE JUNE 2017
Baby has been with us 9 months and has made progress in all areas of her socialization and behavior, some areas better than others. She still remains somewhat skittish, like she knows her name but doesn't come to us when we call her but she will take a treat from our hand. She still has to be caught to go out but once outside with the other dogs and loves playing with them and follows them around, does her business and comes in on her own when it is time to come in. She done well on a leash, but again you have to catch her to put her harness on. She likes to ride in the car and has been no problem when taken to outside events with a lot of people around. She eats well and knows that her food is put in a certain area and goes there to eat. She knows when it is time to go to bed and has her spot next to her foster mom where she goes on her own and sleeps the whole night.

She still has to work on her trust but she is doing very well with continued love and patience. She is a good example of how dogs can suffer from PTSD as humans do, but she is overcoming it with love, patience and understanding. She does well with other dogs of varied sizes and with a person or family willing to give her the time she needs and the patience, love and understanding that will continue to help her grow. She has a lot of love to give. Any questions just ask and we'll be happy to answer them. She's at the Pt. Charlotte event the third Saturday of the month if you would like to meet her.
