Meet Ava

** Ava is a very popular little girl and we are no longer accepting applications for her at this time **

Ava is a JRT/Chihuahua mix that came to us from Barbados. She is 14 pounds and will be 2 years old in September.

Ava was diagnosed with Legg-Calve-Perthes disease in her left rear leg, also known as avascular necrosis of the femoral head. This is a very painful disease that causes the bone within the femoral head to begin to die at an early age. The bone collapses due to these degenerative changes. When she came to us, it was obvious that she was in extreme pain. We took her to an orthopedic specialist who said that the only treatment for her was a femoral head and neck osteotomy (FHO), a very specialized surgery that would remove the head of her femur.

JRTRO arranged to have her surgery performed on May 4th, and Ava has been making a remarkable recovery ever since. She is no longer in pain, uses the leg and is very active and playful. The surgeon said that she should make a full recovery.

For roughly the next 2 months, Ava must be careful to not overextend the leg, so her adopters must watch that she doesn’t do any excessive jumping, however, she should be active and they recommend a lot of walking to ensure that she develops the muscles in her leg, which had atrophied due to lack of use. Ava loves walks so this should not be a problem.

Ava is the sweetest girl, loves everyone and her foster parents have given her the nickname “Wiggles” because she is such a happy little thing, she is always wiggling!

Ava is house trained, leash trained, crate trained, non-aggressive, extremely smart and is basically the most perfect dog. Being a social little girl, Ava needs to be in a home where she won’t be left alone for long periods of time. She will also need a securely fenced backyard to romp around in. She would love to have canine companion(s) as she is fostered with several and enjoys the company immensely!

Ava will suit an active couple or family with responsible and dog experienced children. She loves to snuggle and must go to a home with adopter(s) that will want to play with her. She will make an absolutely perfect companion for the right family!

Ava is being lovingly fostered in Colborne, Ontario, and her adoption fee is $525. She is spayed and up-to-date on vaccines. JRTRO will reimburse the adopter for the cost of microchipping on the first visit to your vet.

If you are interested in Ava, fill out an application at our website: http://russellrescue.org/adoption/ NOTE: ONLY queries with a COMPLETED FORM will receive a reply due to the volume of requests for info we receive.

FILLING IN THE FORM DOES NOT COMMIT YOU TO ADOPTION, but we cannot start a conversation with you without it. AFTER submitting the form we can answer your questions. The application saves our volunteers time and is an important first step for us. It also helps us understand if your home could be the right fit for Ava.

Please note that JRTRO does not place rescue dogs in adoptive or foster homes with resident children under the age of 8 and will not adopt our dogs into homes with unaltered dogs.
