Atlas's Story

FENCE REQUIRED

Fostered in Pensacola

Meet Atlas! This handsome 22-month-old Great Dane is an alum of NWFLGDR looking for a new forever home, through no fault of his own. His current owner is facing military deployment and, unfortunately, can no longer care for him. So Atlas is ready to find his forever family!

Atlas is a sweet, affectionate boy who loves being near his people. Whether he’s lounging on the couch, relaxing on his dog bed, or leaning against you while you cook dinner, he’s happiest when he can be close to his favorite humans. He’s also a big fan of couch snuggles and car rides, where he’ll happily find a way to stay in contact with you!

At home, Atlas is content to relax for much of the day, but he still has plenty of youthful energy. He needs a daily walk or run to burn off that energy and keep him happy. He’s leash-trained and knows “heel,” although he can still pull when excitement gets the better of him. He’s a smart boy who learns quickly, especially when treats are involved! He knows several commands, including sit, lie down, shake, up and heel.

Atlas is a smart boy who picks up new things quickly, although he can be a little stubborn when he has other ideas! He knows several commands, including sit, lie down, shake, up and heel. He’s highly motivated by treats—and ice cubes are a favorite, too! Whether you’re teaching him something new or looking for a way to keep his mind engaged, a tasty reward (or a crunchy ice cube) is sure to get his attention.

Atlas is also a great travel companion. He has no trouble hopping into the back of an SUV, but once he’s settled in, he shows off his true Great Dane nature by finding a way to stay in contact with his favorite person throughout the ride. Whether he’s leaning against you, lounging on the couch or keeping you company in the kitchen, Atlas is happiest when he’s close to his people.

Atlas can be hesitant when meeting unfamiliar dogs, but with proper introductions and a friendly, nonaggressive companion, he can warm up and enjoy playing. However, he does not respond well to aggression from other dogs and may correct them. Introductions should be handled thoughtfully.

Atlas has done well around a respectful 7-year-old child he knows. However, he isn't accustomed to the noise, unpredictability and grabby little hands that often come with toddlers and younger children. He may not understand that a young child reaching for his toys isn't trying to challenge him, and he could react with a corrective nip. For that reason, a home without young children would be best for Atlas. Any placement with children would need careful consideration, with an emphasis on respectful interactions, appropriate boundaries and adult supervision.

Atlas is a loving, loyal companion who will thrive with an adopter who understands the needs of a young Great Dane, can provide daily exercise and continued leash training, and will give him the structure, affection and stability he deserves. A securely fenced yard is required.

Atlas is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped.

His adoption fee is $400. To review our adoption requirements before applying, please visit www.nwflgdr.com/adopt.

Please Note: NWFLGDR does not transport dogs. All approved adopters are required to pick up their dog in person from the foster parent.,

Our Great Danes require a sturdy fenced in yard, particularly young or active danes. Generally, a six-foot or higher privacy fencing is preferred. In certain circumstances, the Board may waive this requirement depending upon the Dane's personality and temperament. Any such exceptions will solely be at the discretion of the Rescue Board. Under no circumstances will we consider invisible or electric fencing as acceptable. 6. We only adopt Dogs as indoor pets. We will not adopt Dogs to be used as guard dogs or to be kept out-of-doors. 7. A home visit is required for ALL adoptions, without exception. This is not a white-glove inspection, rather it is to ensure that the home is a safe environment for the Great Dane. 8. We do not transport. If you are applying from out of area or out of state, understand that if your application gets approved, you will be expected to pick up the dane in the location that he/she is being fostered.
