Meet Gertie<br/><br/>Gertie is a beautiful nine-year-old Persian who has already come such a long way.<br/><br/>When Gertie first arrived at UPAWS, she was so severely matted that she could barely move. She was thin, very sick, and absolutely terrified. All she could do was hiss and scream to keep everyone away—and honestly, it broke our hearts.<br/><br/>We knew we couldn’t rush her.<br/><br/>It took weeks of patience and tiny, tiny baby steps before Gertie felt safe enough for us to shave away the painful mats. Since then, we have continued earning her trust a little at a time while helping her feel better physically.<br/><br/>And look at her now.<br/><br/>When you open the door to Gertie’s cat condo, she looks for you. She pokes out her little head, purrs, and sometimes even does a happy little dance around you. The girl who was once too frightened to let anyone near her now craves human attention, affection, and gentle touch.<br/><br/>Her beautiful coat is beginning to grow back in the cutest little layer of peach fuzz. She has gained weight, become much friendlier, and made wonderful progress. We are so proud of her—and we absolutely adore this girl.<br/><br/>Gertie needs a quiet, peaceful home and will most likely be happiest as the only pet. Most of all, she needs a patient and loving person who understands that adjusting may take time. Whatever Gertie needs, she needs—and she deserves someone willing to let her set the pace.<br/><br/>Gertie currently eats Hill’s k/d, a prescription food formulated to support kidney health. Her adopter will need to have an established veterinarian who can oversee her continued care.<br/><br/>Gertie may hide at first. She may need more time than another cat would. But for the right person, earning her trust and watching her continue to blossom will be something truly special.<br/><br/>Gertie’s adoption fee has been sponsored by the friends and family of UPAWS staff member Ann B. in honor of her birthday fundraiser. There is no fee to adopt this very special girl.
