Meet Bam Bam

Bam Bam is a 16 year old Russian Blue beauty—and a special needs cat who needs a foster or furever home. (He was born around 1/12/97).  He was left at the kill shelter by his previous owners who said he was too aggressive. In all likelihood it was because he was a very sick kitty and clearly was not receiving the medical attention he needed.  He had been suffering with untreated diabetes and pancreatitis for clearly a long time since he is a boney and underweight kitty. Anjellicle saved him from the at risk list. Someone said they wanted to adopt and care for Bam Bam in his last few years. However, it was just not the right fit. So now Bam Bam is with a foster mom who is caring for him and helping regulate his insulin. But her inn is full with other cats—one of whom is not happy that Bam Bam is there.

Bam Bam is a diabetic which means he will need daily care that consists of a special diet (low carb, no grain, canned food, and possibly some raw food.) He will also need to be given insulin shots daily after his blood glucose is checked before each shot. Currently, Bam Bam seems to be doing fairly well on a low-dose, one-insulin-shot-a-day regimen. This is not the standard protocol (usually it's 2 shots per day.)  But his blood glucose numbers are lower on the one shot than when his foster had him on two.

He has been with us for 6 weeks and only got diagnosed with pancreatitis 2 weeks ago when he had a flare up. This is also a treatable disease (and probably the root cause of the diabetes) He seems to have a mild case of it, but will need some attention paid to regulating it and responding if there is a flare up (which might entail a few drugs and subQ fluids.)  Other than that, Bam Bam's blood test looked great--with no signs of kidney disease even, which is common in older cats. He is a healthy eater and has been lapping up his Catkins canned and raw diet. He is sweet and purrs, and has signs of being a lap cat (probably not fully coming out because of so many other cats in the foster's household.) Since Bam Bam is a senior he pretty much sleeps the entire day, but he does batt some toys around and is up in the morning ready to try to entice you out of bed to feed him.
