My name is Lumi, which must be short for "Luminous" for I am a silver-haired beauty who glows with gerbil energy. Like most gerbils, I enjoy chewing cardboard, running in my wheel, perching on a friendly human hand and fluffing up my nest for a nap when I need to recharge. I'm different from most gerbils, though, in that I prefer to have personal space rather than live in chummy closeness with others of my species. Some may call me solitary, a loner but really, I'm just a girl who marches to the beat of her own drum. As a single gerbil, I will need a special human who understands my special needs. I tend to startle at sudden sounds and movements and would benefit from a patient, experienced adopter who will help me build trust and confidence in a quiet environment. They are going to be spending most of their lives inside their cage; your housing must be as large as the below or larger (bigger is always better!) in order to adopt this pet. <br/>2-3 gerbils: 15-gallon aquarium with wire mesh cover, 20 gallon aquarium if no cover<br/>4-5 gerbils: 20-gallon aquarium with wire mesh cover, 30 gallon aquarium if no cover<br/><br/>Gerbils are a social species, meaning the company of their own kind is critical to their health and well being. If there are two names listed together (eg Peanut Butter w/Jelly), that means that the two animals are a bonded pair of friends, and must be adopted together. <br/><br/>Gerbil friends must be same sex, unless your current single is already neutered.<br/> <br/>Got a single at home you're looking for a friend for? Contact Dakin to discuss whether your gerbil can be introduced to a gerbil or gerbils at the adoption center. Introducing gerbils can be tricky. If you aren't experienced in doing this, we can offer guidance. Please don't attempt to introduce unfamiliar ADULT gerbils to each other. Adult gerbils can be territorial and will likely view a new adult as a threat, leading them to fight.
