Meet Zeus

Meet Zeus. Zeus is a 6-7 year old great dane who was left abandoned at a condemned home for over a week before we were contacted to help him.

What happened to Zeus leading up to his abandonment, we will never know. But guessing by the shape that he came to us in - starved and parasitic with heartworms and intestinal worms and full of body sores - his life had not been an easy one. Or likely filled with any love. In fact, we believe he may have been hit. He’s definitely lived outside.

Zeus is very sweet with women, but he can be nervous and hesitant with some men, and he’s growly and vocal when he’s distrustful of someone. He warns them and does the side glances. He also ducks his head a lot with sudden movements.

Zeus has been excellent with the other dogs we’ve had him around. Respectful and calm. He’s not one for play. We do not know how he is with cats. He was so loving and affectionate in a 6 hour car ride from Jacksonville to Pensacola with two young kids in the vehicle, he loved on them the entire trip. He has the capacity to love, he just needs to trust you.

Zeus is really not a fan of vets or being boarded at vets offices. They terrify him, and kennel confinement terrifies him. He has barrier issues, When he's scared he will growl and charge the kennel door. Once he's out of the kennel, he's a whole new dog. Care must be taken to go slow and steady while at the vet. And again, he prefers females over men.

Because of his fearful nature and propensity to growl and snap, we believe Zeus should go to a dane savvy home with older children or none at all.

Zeus is not a first time dane owner dog. No exceptions. He doesn’t trust new people easily, he doesn’t like new situations, and he needs someone who can read his signals and not set him up to fail.

We do not know what happened in Zeus's life prior to him coming to us at a senior stage, but we do know it wasn't an easy life. We also know that Zeus is an amazing boy for the right person / family. He is such a loyal boy, quiet and unassuming in nature, and respectful and mannered. He is housetrained too and perfectly fine traveling in the car as well. And affectionate and snuggly once he trusts you. You’ve made a friend for life.

Zeus is fully vetted and will soon be ready for his forever home. Zeus is being treated for heartworms and his slow kill treatments will need to be continued after adoption until he tests negative, sometimes this can be upwards of a year.

Zeus’ adoption fee is $225.
