Meet LAYLA AB#17-176

Gender: FEMALE
Age: APPROX 7 MONTHS (6-15-2017)
Weight: 30 POUNDS
Color: TRI-COLOR (black, brown, white) + FRECKLES
Breed: ENGLISH SETTER MIX

Good with Children: Unknown. Layla does tend to puppy nip.

Good with Dogs: Yes. She loves her foster sister’s canine companionship. She really enjoys playful dogs who also love to run, chase, share toys, and play tug-of-war. She holds her own with dogs twice her size. Aggressive dogs may overwhelm her since she immediately assumes the submissive role.

Good with Cats: Unknown.

House trained: Working on it. Layla knows to relieve herself outside and subtly goes to the door when she needs to go out but communication is not yet blatant. She hasn’t had an accident in the house since her urinary tract infection was treated. Fortunately, she views puppy diapers as fancy pants to her sweater dress and does not try to remove them.

Crate trained: Yes, but not for long periods (not more than 2 hours). The confinement causes her distress.

Leash trained: Yes, somewhat. She’s manageable on the leash but will chew through it if left unattended. She has a harness (which will come with her) since she darts and dashes to pay attention to everything. She learns quickly but still has a lot to learn.

Activity Level: High-octane! Layla is very energetic and loves to play, chase, and fetch so she’s seeking a backyard with very regular access. She also chills hard and is sounds asleep within minutes.

Fence REQUIRED: Fenced backyard is absolutely perfect for Layla but not an electric fence. Fenced backyard with free roaming privileges would be great for Layla because she LOVES to run and sprint freely and play like a wild child. She is a much calmer puppy if this need is met. Leash walking doesn’t give her the same release and we find that she chews more when she has nervous pent-up energy.

Behavior: Layla is all puppy right now, with typical puppy tendencies. She loves affection and to be treated like a little human with couch and bed privileges. She is very sweet, gentle, fun, playful, happy, and loving but, she can be a little skittish and fearful of new things at first.

Medical History: Layla is spayed, up to date on vaccines & microchipped.
*Layla originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She has tested negative, but Leishmaniasis can remain dormant in the system for many years, so their potential adopter must be willing to commit to having them tested annually for the next 7 years.

Foster Comments:
1/ Her teeth are currently in perfect shape. She had a dental Oravet treatment on 1-2-2018. The vet highly recommends daily brushing to keep them healthy.

2/ Layla has proven to be a very picky eater, and refuses to eat even a very high quality kibble. We’ve tried many different options and finally found a canned stew that she really enjoys and slurps down. When she refused to eat kibble, she would get manic and try to eat rocks because she was hungry. She’s smart and stubborn and knows what she wants.

3/ Looking for a parent/family who is home most of the day because Layla doesn’t like being crated, has some separation anxiety, and does not do well if left alone for long periods of time. If working outside the home, she does well at doggie daycare and is loved by all.

4/ She is a typical puppy and can find mischief if unsupervised. Prior experience with the puppy phase is a bonus.

5/ Positive reinforcement, especially regarding house training, has produced wonderful results. She frightens easily and will run from you if she feels threatened by what she perceives to be a punishing tone of voice. Inversely, she will gladly come sprinting to an enthusiastic tone. Fortunately, Layla is also very treat motivated. She is currently being trained to ring a bell to signal a need to go outside. (A doggie door would be helpful since she pees frequently but is not required.)

6/ Couch and bed privileges, such as night time sleeping cuddled in bed, are some of her favorite places to be.

7/ A meet & greet with other potential K9 siblings is welcomed and encouraged, if possible. (Northwest Indiana.)

8/ GPS tracking on collar could provide comfort because Layla might be a flight risk. Layla is super quick and has slipped through an open door lightning fast before so we’ve had to be very careful when exiting and entering. If curious or scared, she has tried to explore/escape.

Adoption fee: $395.00

Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue is not a shelter, but a group of volunteers who are committed to finding excellent homes for the dogs in our program. All of our dogs are living in foster homes in states across the country. Often times a dog is not geographically close to where an adopter lives. When possible, transport assistance is provided at no cost to the adopter. Our transports are coordinated by dedicated volunteers and driven by selfless volunteers.
