6/6/2017: Nina is a beautiful German Shepherd. She’s made amazing progress since she arrived a few months ago. We highly suspect that she’s been abused in the past. When she first arrived here, she didn’t allow anyone to touch her and was protective and reactive. Our staff has been working with Nina and she continues to become more and more trusting. You can see in the video just how well she does with our staff member who’s worked with her the most. Nina is a wonderful dog with a lot of great qualities, but she absolutely needs a home with someone who has personally worked with and parented a dog with severe fear aggression.  She is not a dog for someone wanting to adopt their first dog, even if you grew up with dogs. She also needs a home without kids, cats or other dogs. She would not be a good match for someone living in an apartment or other multi-family building. She needs a house and a fenced yard.

If you’re interested in adopting Nina, we’d have you meet with her multiple times along with a staff member in order to learn how to work with her behaviors and gain her trust before taking her home. The person who adopts her will need to be patient, motivated to work on continued socialization with her, and responsible in handling Nina. But the rewards will be amazing and well worth it: knowing that you helped a fearful dog learn to trust and become a fun and happy dog and also a great companion! With people she trusts, Nina will roll over for a belly rub and give gentle kisses. She loves car rides, jumping in and out of the kiddie pools, splashing in mud puddles, having her back scratched near the base of her tail, and running around the yard like a nut! She’s very silly and sweet. She knows sit, lay down, watch me, and "Nina, come to me". She likes treats and she also responds well to verbal and physical praise. She loves to go for walks and would probably enjoy jogging, too. She really is a great dog!

Nina is about 2 1/2 years old and she weighs 63 lbs. She’s been spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for heartworms.

Lindsey has a congenital birth defect causing severe hip dysplasia.
